What's up with the Magic Auction .. it's the same old junk that's been on there for months. Isn't anyone new dropping out of the magic industry?
Come on, I'm bored with all this ... where's the good stuff? Steve |

Same thing on Taylor's site .. nothing is moving on there either. Where is all Wyrick's equipment? Who else is throwing in the towel?
As I've said before .. I went from being a stage illusionist to a balloon artist thanks to the current economy. Steve |

Paula Paul had a bunch of her cool, original stuff for sale... I'm out of the 'illusion' biz too so I didn't follow thru, but it looked promising for someone!
I also do have a few Original, One of a kind pieces too... if you are looking. Otherwise, EMC (Eric and his creative band of brothers...) has some cool newer stuff. To connect with Paula Paul... do a search right here at the Café. She recently (with-in the last month) posted her illusions, costumes show stuff in the "Illusions For Sale" section of the Café IF they are still there, but you can reach here with a simple search either way. I am happy to help anyone... I spent MANY years performing illusion at fairs, cruise ships, casinos, theme parks and more. I’d be happy to be of value and incite if I can. “Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. If you are bored with magic, it's your own fault. The solution to your boredom lies within you. The rest of the world is under no obligation to relieve you of boredom. It's your problem. Deal with it. At least that's what I tell my Wiz Kids and it usually results in new magic every once in a while. Look at Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki's output on my site.

In a nicer way, I agree that 'the magic is in the eye of the beholder' and that good magic is NOT necessarily a byproduct of big money or big boxes. LOTS of killer examples of awesome impact with out tons of money or ‘propage’ being employed. That is NOT to say that it can’t… there is room for both, isn’t there?

Boredom has nothing to do with a bad economy...
Many magicians are feeling the pinch and putting things on hold including selling and buying props. My extra work has ground to a halt and I'm not doing much buying either, likewise I'm not selling much because the market is so bad and I can't get a decent price. The only recent additions to MagicAuction are the Blaney suspensions but with the extra income not there I can't afford to make the investment...

An add on to Chezeday - I know where he is comming from about picking the magical bones of those that folded and called it quits. NOW is the time to buy magic and when this blows over the strong ones that surrvived will get the shows!! Viva la Magica!!

In these poor economical times, few have thousands to buy the illusions listed.

Actually Magic Auction has some stuff I'm interested in. And luckily I do have lots of money. I've never used them before, but I just hate how the site is set up. Looks like something from the 90s. Furthermore, there is no direct communication with the seller and the descriptions are too scant. I like to ask questions before I plunk down $2000 to $10,000 on a used illusion, and going through an intermediary is such a hassle. But the deals are pretty good so I will be buying shortly.
Question, is it ok to offer LESS than the opening bid??? Can I at least try? Cheers! |

MrBadguy, the magicauction will not accept a lesser bid on items. You must always bid more than the last bid. Items are listed at the minimum acceptable by the seller.

That is not entirely true. I have emailed Christine and told her that I had X amount to pay and asked if she would contact the seller and make them that offer. She did every time I asked, and more often than not a deal was made.

Yes, the Magic Auction is a bit simple but for some reason it's still the place everyone goes to buy and sell illusions.
The communication isn't direct with the seller and sometimes things get lost in the translation but, I still can't complain. They helped me move a few pieces and made some room in the garage/warehouse. I'd like to see more of a "live" auction with direct contact to the seller .. more like eBay would be ideal. Still, it's not so bad ... Steve |

Dean, thanks for the reference to my goods. Someone wrote to me due to your note. Very nice of you.
I retired long before this Economic turn, but have just stored everything in a building we have on premises, since then. It's been a little crazy to do that, because I have kept air conditioning running in the building every summer, to keep things from getting ruined. Now, I need to clear out some space. My new business is bulging at the seams. I need the storage space emptied - to give over to some activity. But, I don't know who would want my Pyrotechnic Boulder, or my Old Tree (which replaced the need for a table, held a few st##ls, had some great match pulls, and had branches that held a huge candle, and other branches, holding a clear bucket to throw my fingertip flowers into). I am putting a few simple things in the "Magic for Sale" section today or tomorrow. Real basic stuff. But, I need to take photos of the tree and boulder, and see if anyone buys magic that ISN'T the stuff that people already know. Maybe next week. When I was working, and I wanted something new, I would look through the final book of the Tarbell set. It is the index. I always found great stuff there. Some of my "keepers". There was a thing with tapes and an audience member's coat that I really liked, but never tried ... Maybe it has been popularized by someone, now. I’m afraid I don’t keep up with everything in The Business. But, I loved Tarbell. It was already ancient history when I was working. For a long time, you could do effects that no one else was doing from those books. Now, in an age where magicians have to come up with new material every year or every week for TV, there is probably not a page of magic from ANY time, unturned. Paula P.S. I also have a set of outfits for girls, very well made, covered with 10mm rhinestones (do you know how FEW people will spend the money for such big rhinestones!) With Showgirl Helmets in silver. All the same costume, but all in different colors. EACH girl has a bag, big enough to get into, that is in the color of each one's costume. I look at that and think "Well, there is some magician's 60 seconds on 'America's Got Talent!'" |
