Hello;
Johan Lorbeer has made quite a name for himself doing this stunt/levitation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxgGRzai_j8 I'm told, however, that Robert Houdin wrote up/performed a near identical illusion back in his day. Does anyone know more about this? Any references to books or links? Thanks a lot! |

First, you need to know that the magician you are referring to was not named Robert Houdin. It was Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, and he used Robert-Houdin (with a hyphen)as his stage name. You'll find a reference to his "Aerial Suspension" in "Modern Magic" by Professor Hoffman (a.k.a Angelo John Lewis). However, the suspension shown in the video (it is not a levitation, unless we missed seeing him rise up the side of the wall to that height) is more like an East Indian version described in Henry Hay's Cyclopedia of Magic under "Levitation." Truly, everything old is new again.

Spellbinder;
I really appreciate the references! I'll seek them out immediately. Posted: Jul 13, 2010 10:05am --------------------------------- I've checked out Aerial Suspension, and it's very different in mechanics and execution - so off I go to find hays All other suggestions welcome. |

It is also detailed in Bruce Armstrong's book The Encyclopedia of Levitations and Suspensions.

Have a look in Christopher's Illustrated History of Magic - or other works which cover that ground. It goes back to the Indian Fakirs and likely before them too.

I'd like to see him get in and out of it... without giving it away?

It's a variation on the old Indian fakir trick, of course.
If the proper "prep work" is done ahead of time, all he would need to get into floating mode would be something to stand on and a regular Aerial Suspension rig with an extension on it.

You mean he was not floating around and just happened to get his hand stuck to the wall with crazy glue?

Back to the original proposition. We don't get to see how Lorbeer set the thing up.

But, talk about a way to get hired and get PR for youself and the store you're stuck, I mean, suspended at...
I too wonder about his getting up and down, unless they used some screen or something like they do with window dressing at Xmas. Magically, Walt |

I had a book when I was a kid called something like "The History of Magic" that had great little articles and drawings of effects going back to Egypt and the Greeks.
I've always had half a mind to try to build a "Hero's decapitate horse" some day. This thread reminded me because the indian fakir suspension was in it. But does anyone remember this book and know the proper name for it?

It could have been any one of several books. You can save yourself a lot of trouble, though. Owen Magic Supreme has built three of them. One is in a collection in Texas (not mine!). I don't know the location of the other two. There is a big problem with the plumbing, though.

Yeah I thought the plumbing might be trickier then the author thought. You need to keep the line air-free while its disconnected or you lose the siphon effect.
