I don't like to work outdoors but it does come up. I'm looking for suggestions of Silk Magic that isn't too effected by wind or possible ambient backlighting.
I think the Stand-Up show really lacks something without Silk but I don't like endangering my silks. I don't always work over a surface of my choosing. - Mary Mowder |

Wind is a MAJOR problem with outdoor silk magic. However, it can also be made to work for you. Think about productions for possibilities. (Remember that outdoors, you PA system will also contribute its share of problems. The show needs to be very visual!)
MisMade Flag works well in the wind. In France (using the French flag), it was perfect "traveling trick". Down here on the Gulf Beaches it also works well. Box and bag magic is a great way to produce silks outdoors. Good items are Square Circle, Sesame Box, Crystal Silk Cylinder, Double Load Pagoda, etc. Of course, I love to produce a Line of Silks outdoors. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thank you Bob.
I currently do Silk on/off Rope and knot off Silk (the one where a hole is left in the Silk) and a Blendo change bag routine. - Mary Mowder |

My son and I use lots of silks in our premier show which is primarily done indoors for the corporate market.
We also use a lot of silk in our birthday party show which again is mostly indoors, however we have had a few outdoor birthday parties and don't really have an issue as we use things like Bob's line of silks in that show. We have another large stage show that we created to be outdoor proof and after attempting to use a THIS just one time in the wind, we replaced it with a drawer box and no longer have any silks in that show at all. |

I perform 75% of my shows out of doors. The only silk effect I routinely do is half dyed hank.
Any silk trick where you never let go of the silk or set it down on a table would work outside. I've also done 20th Century Silks on occasion without issue.

Mary there are a number of good suggestions above. I think you might want to look into Charley Edward’s “Self-untying Knots” (aka Slydini’s silks). The handkerchiefs never leave your hands, there is plenty of audience participation, and the magic is strong.

20th Century works fine...don't try THIS outside (I actually saw a guy do it and the silks were blowing straight out sideways except for the "empty" ones!
I got quite a chuckle out of it.

Thank you every one.
My fountain of Silks is built along the lines of "This" luckily I tried it outdoors before a show to see if light would pose a problem. Light wasn't the half of it. Now I go outside to check everything I plan to do outdoors. Sometimes I will go with a rope effect that I know could be a problem if it's windy. I just adjust and do a little shorter routine if it's too windy. I do Crystal Silk Cylinder if the ground is not to bad. My final load is a long streamer which can work depending on the conditions. I'm sure others can use this information as well. - Mary Mowder |

Remember that you can combine 20th Century Silks with Silk to Egg. Outdoors is hardly a problem with this. Wind even makes the finally of 20th Century even better.
