I'll be yelling from the rooftops Courtney!
I should start recording my calls I reckon. A friend was in on Friday when I took one and it was a classic. The final words from the client as we were closing the call were. "By the way, how much is it?" Sean |

It sounds like some of you add balloons or games to your show to make it longer and a better value for your customer. So if your show is an hour long and you have some games/balloons in it, how much (or long )is the magic part and how much is other stuff?

I don't do any balloons or games. All 4 of my hour long shows are strictly magic. I just have lots and lots of kids effects.

I would get bored doing the same thing over and over again. My wife, on the other hand, loves repetitive work.
I have 3 different children's characters, each with 3 different show lengths, so that is 9 shows. Each character has their own website, so there is not a plethora of show options. There is some cross-over, and each show is always a work in progress. I keep changing things not so much for the kids, but first for myself and second for the parents who want something else. When a parent sees me at doing a show and wants to book me, they want me, not the show. They may get the same show - they may not, but it will be in the same persona and the same (or better) quality. Most routines I use are less than 2 years old. When I get bored with them, and find something as good or better I switch up. There is a core group that I keep much longer, I may stop using for a few years and them pick back up again. My PB&J has seen nearly 20 years of use, and I am slowly retiring it. I have found that after I got to a critical level of magic understanding/experience, new routines were not hard to implement and do not require the practice that I once needed. That is not saying there is no breaking in period, it just is a lot shorter. I have way more magic than I need. I just like new routines - they keep me sane-er. |

I finally did the birthday show for my grandson. All of the kids (about 10 kids ages 3-7) had a great time. I performed 6 tricks and the show lasted about 45 minutes. After the show, one of the parents asked me if I would do a show for their kid. When we talked about if I should change up the tricks, since her kid's birthday is just a month away, she said "No". She said that she felt her daughter would be disappointed if I did not do the same show.

I personally have two different magic shows, the only difference is one is my "standard" magic package.
and the second one is a more DELUXE show with more props and effects |

I generally offer two shows.
One is a 45 minute comedy magic show. The other is the same show plus 45 minutes of fancy balloon art. over 75% of the people who call book the 1.5 hour package. If a kid sees me at a party and wants to have me at their party, I always do the same show. This is a DIFFERENT experience for the birthday kid, because I am spoiling them rotten during the show. If a family is having me back for the same kids birthday the next year, I will change up about 1/3 of the show, because it is likely the majority of the audience has seen me do the last years show. |

One bag show for kids in the park, One bag show for adults in a living room, 2 table shows for adults 45 minutes each with effects that don't fit in the pockets, 12 tricks for strolling, 1 mid sized show for kids indoors or out, 4 mid sized shows for adults (Magic, mentalism, escapes, audience participation), 1 1man large show for kids on a stage, 3 assisted shows for adults, with 1 helper, 3 full sized illusion shows with 4 to 6 assistants that have a mixture of effects.
No repeats but I substitute effects that fit a formula. My warehouse is 1700 Sq foot. The truth is that all of this is like owning 40 pairs of shoes, you can only wear one pair at a time and you have to pay for storage of all the rest. As for the question of weather to do the same show on a repeat... ASK. If it's the same kids and it's less then a year I'll do a different show but if it's been a year they usually only remember the shape, size and color of a trick and not the routine.
