Gee, I guess I didn't put enough smileys, dancing bananas, and lols in that sentence.
Also, since Arizona has gone all Third Reich -sb 1070 on us, I've backtracked my position and heartily endorse all sorts of civil disobedience on this matter.

The couple of times I've heard Nazi references, it was with respect to the requirement that legal aliens carry proof of their right to be in the country; this requirement has already long been set forth in Federal law: ("Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d). Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall upon conviction for each offense be fined not to exceed $100 or be imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both. (INA § 264(e))") The main legal complaint that the Department of Justice seems to have with 1170 is its usurping the executive branch's asserted right to not enforce federal law for various reasons, including political ones (e.g. diplomatic ties with Mexico). In other words, it's essentially not a legal fight (at least not yet) over the substance of the law, but a jurisdictional dispute. Constitutionally interesting, but what's the Nazi-like aspect of it?

You know, I am as pro letting folks in from Mexico as anyone and I don't consider the Arizona law to be Nazi like at all. Arizona desires that the existing laws are followed and they are far less hard core that Mexico's laws are. If a state tried to implement Mexico style laws the lefties would be in coma's.

If our economy keeps going the way it is, someday that might be a real issue
Although I expect people to try to go to Canada to work first as its not nearly as messed up politically or economically as Mexico. It would be a bitter sweet irony to see Canada deporting illegal US citizens in mass numbers.

Will everyone in Arizona have to always carry citizenship papers with them at all times, or just the ones that "look" or "sound" alien? Is an Irish or Scottish accent enough to get one's papers checked?

There are lots of Irish illegals. Again, I'm an open border dude and think the biggest problem out of Mexico is the danger and drug angle. I believe you are always suppose to have ID on you.
What are people going to do in Canada? Manufacturing is dead there, moved to Mexico. I know...I watched 'em do it. |

Why is everybody making such a fuss about a Soundblaster card? PPS I believe that the relevant legislation is SB1070.

Don't know where the jobs are, but apparently there are some to be had. Come to think of it, I don't know of a single unemployed person (speaking of friends, relatives, or casual acquaintances) here in Canada. One of my friends had a mid to high level management job at a benefits consulting company and was terminated six or so months back (for speaking her mind too often to some higher ups), but she received a pretty good severance package and found a new and better job fairly quickly.

Anyone see Steve Valentines haircut? Nice!
Believe me, I saw tons of manufacturing leave Canada, major corporations like Nortel (SCS), Celestica, those dudes, RIM, a great company, hung in there. They moved to Mexico for the most part after NAFTA. I don't care if Canada has 100% employment, doesn't mean the major manufacturers didn't cut and run....being socialist everyone likely works for the country anyway. |

Most Canadian manufacturing was in one province: Ontario. It has certainly suffered the most from the exit of manufacturing jobs. For better or worse, most of the rest of the country earns its living from resources--Balducci and I live in Oil Country. For better or for worse, most Canadians have accepted their lot as hewers of wood and drawers of water.

Santa, I don't not believe you. But as you note, RIM and others hung in there and have done well, and new manufacturers are coming along. Just last week, Whiteboard maker SMART Technologies Inc., an electronic manufacturing company based right here in Calgary, had the year's biggest IPO so far (in the U.S. or in Canada).
http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=111&sid=2003344 Anyway, I think my point from before was just that there do appear to be jobs available up here for those willing to make the move.

Duuude, my old company bought one of those SMART boards and after getting it going an idiot went in and used a sharpie on it and ruined the thing.
Canada was great to deal with, Mexico was too once you got in with them as far as trust goes. |
