Has anyone ever done a routine with a carpenter's ruler? You know, the old style that folds up? Robert Baxt did a great routine with him mother as a theme. I got one at from a dealer at the IBM convention and wondered if anyone has had any success with creating a "spelling" routine with one of these types of rulers.

David Ginn makes a fishing pole wand and he uses it to demonstrate the letters W M and the number 4 as a parody to Sesame Street.
David Ginn / Paul Morley also use it for telling the story of Jesus healing the man who was lowered down through a roof. Maybe you could try a different story.

Maybe this is what you're looking for:
A MEASURE OF FUN, published in 1978 by Daren Dundee. 3 typed pages (folded in half, stapled to soft cardboard illustrated covers), with 15 illustrations of designs/objects to make with a folding "measuring stick." The designs include: window, car steering wheel w/shift, shower head & pipe, umbrella, shovel, seatbelt, small animal cage, bucket (large cup?) with straw, airplane 'steering wheel', cigar, viewmaster, machine gun, beard, crutch. Included is the complete comedy routine/script, "My No-Frills Plane Trip." Years ago, I paid $2.00 for this booklet, but I do not recall where I purchased it. TED El Campo, TX |

Fairchild Magic sent me a "testers prop" which is a "six foot" "Ruler", and on the opposite side has "two meters". It's quite cool, and I've been using it recently (I shelved it for several years).
Tricky to pitch it right, as most kids don't get it, but it's a nice piece to entertain the adults, and with the right patter, it goes over very well. :) |
