Zig Zag all the way, one of the greatest Illusions of them all.
Robert Harbin's presentation is still the best. Just my opinion of course ..... |

Depends on how you perform them

I agree, the ‘magic’ is in the hands of the performer… that said, my PERSONAL opinion and experience is that the Harbin Zig-Zag still kicks serious butt! Can be done as an audience participation… get lots of time if you like and visually VERY interesting.

Zig Zag, done Harbin's way. Straight forward and simple. It's like redoing Mary Poppins without Julie Adnrews, just isn't quite the same.

When I opened this thread I thought I was going to be the odd man out. I am really surprised at the post so far. That being said, cast another vote for the Zig Zag.

One nice thing about Zig-Zag is that a relatively untrained local model can be used in performance with a little pre-show rehearsal and no contortions to speak of.

I prefer the cub zag to be honest. With Zig Zag only one thing happens. Her middle is moved. With the cub zag, shes penetrated, divided, and zaged. Almost 3 illusions in one.

Actually with the ZZ, two things happen, she is divided with blades, and then zigged, or is it zagged? Oh well!

The fact the audience can still see parts of the live assistant gives the ZZ an edge over the CZ.
I believe the ZZ looks more magical and the CZ is more of a puzzle.

I have never liked the "cube zag" illusion. Even when I saw it a a layman I felt like I knew how it was done. I like the zig zag a lot better. But it's all about personal preference. I like the combo version best myself...the mini cube zag with 3 swords....like I said, personal preference.

I hate to disagree with most people here, but both illusions can be done in more than one way!!! The basic principles are still there, but if you have some creativity, you can do a zigzag a couple of times each doing it in a different way. The Cubezag however has the possibility of being a prop where you can do more than just separate her, runs tubes through her and put her back. I have about 5 to 6 different routines for a Cubezag that I designed that would work and all of which surprise not only audience members, but magicians as well.

In the end, the performer will either make or break the illusion. Both of these illusions are time tested. The ZigZag is instantly recognized by many lay people, and is a perennial favorite of theirs. I have had people ask me once they learn that I am a magician if I do that one trick where you cut the girl into 3 pieces.
Also as important, is the quality of the prop being used. Too many home made ZigZags exist out there that are built incorrectly, and therefore lose the visual effectiveness of the slide over. I have seen too many videos of performers that can't even get the middle section to slide all the way over, which just angers and disappoints me to no end. They might as well have presented it with a mask on in my opinion, because those performances do nothing but expose the illusion. To summarize: A well made prop with a well rehearsed performance and either of these illusions will be an audience pleaser. My 2¢ Chris |

I vote for the Zig-Zag. I still remember how it felt to see that, for the first time, as a kid. It was just so magical to me.
On the other hand, when I first saw the Cube-Zag, I thought, "What the hell is that?" Not exactly a good reaction to an illusion. I always thought that it was a stupid illusion, in itself, although I have seen some present it well. |

Each illusion is only as strong as it's performance. Although I prefer the Cub Zag, the Zig Zag still has a special place in my heart. It was my first illusion when I was 13 years old. That's back when my show fit in the back of my dad's station wagon with the simulated wood panels on the side.
The Cub Zag is a more puzzling illusion, I've always had great reaction with it. It's simple, practical and angle proof. You really can't beat that. Of all my illusions .. that's the one I've made my money back on. Not many can say that ... Steve |
