I got sick of magic a long time ago, lmao. I keep going, because I realized the better drug: the moment of astonishment. (PH) For me, the magic is when a giant smile spreads across a face, and I know I've just made someone's day. (True story) One late night I had the urge to preform, and I showed a man 2 effects I had been working on. Afterwards, we talked for a while, and before I left, he confided in me that he was on his way home to end his life, and that I had changed his mind. Needless to say I was speechless. It was at that moment I realized the magic wasn't "look what I can do"; It was "let's experience this together". It's not about the quantity, it's the quality. You're not alone in this thinking, I promise. There's no need to know thousands of effects and all the latest stuff. I rarely buy new stuff, and at any given time I usually only have about 12 effects polished to perform. I'd rather do only one trick well than a hundred bad ones. The magic's there, you'll find it!

I will always be looking for what does not exist as its the coolest felling when you find it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Ah, Brian -- to change another person's Worldview because you demonstrate that what he thinks is impossible might be only an illusion. Kind of Shamanic. Certainly considered magic by everyone except many magicians.
I was faced by a choice more than 50 years ago as to whether to use performance magic to entertain or to use it to help people with problems (entertain a new idea). Any "trick" can be of quality if quality is the goal.

I don't want to be the jerk here but I couldn't help to notice your admiration to Jay Sankey.
I rarely hear magicians calling them "their favorite" and when that happens that would probably mean lack of knowledge. I will go on to advice you to look up to the the men that built this craft. I know that Sankey is a great creator and a very talented man but...try reading and watching some of the "professor" Dai Vernon, or Slydini...or Edward Marlo...etc. I also noticed that you "hated" David Regal's amazing book. Can't see why...David's thinking in magic is astonishing and his book was really AMAZING! In general since you are an "ellusionist" child try going a bit "oldschool" No one has "all the core mechanics of magic down"...This is naive talk there. You and all of us are always going to be students of magic...if you think that you got all the core mechanics of magic down then it's not that the magic is gone for you...you just need to grow up. PLEASE don't get me wrong...i'm not telling you this stuff to start an argument or to insult you in any way. I just write as I would talk to a friend of mine. I consider you as my brother in magic and I'm talking to you like I wanna be talked.SINCERELY. Take care I hope you'll find your way and best and magical wishes always De'Mon-Greece (5:52 here in the morning!) P.S if you want something modern and groundbreaking...read Tarbell's Course in magic.ALL 8 Volumes. He was much more modern than a lot of the new guys around Peace
The things that are most real to me are the illusions which I create...everything else is quicksand...

Sounds like many have gone through this.
Similar to what someone else suggested, I suggest performing for kids, but not just any; go to the children's ward of a local hospital. You will need to get cleared by the volunteer staff, but something that gets you to focus on others, and seeing how much they appreciate it (the children and the staff), is very rewarding and uplifting. It will bring you a new found joy in performing magic. John

FJ, I too experience that same "cycle" of interests and seem to cycle through the many interests I have.
A question for the Café members: how would you recommend keeping the focus on magic and not "cycling" out? Cheers, Kirk |

Pop, I sort of did that...unintentionally.
I am currently on a long medical leave and am using it to refocus my magic. Going back to basics: RRTCM and Bobo. Just now thinking of moving into Erdnase. It's Herb's recommendation I need to work on... Perhaps I need to set goals for myself, or set up a performance that I must prepare for. Cheers, Kirk |

When you get hungry enough, you will set up a show, prepared for it or not.
