My PN routine has me sutting the rope three times. I start with the rope coiled in a box on the floor and pull it out, cutting "correct" the first two times and "magic" on the third time. While the standard clothesline is okay for birthday parties, I'd like to use a larger diameter colored rope for parlor/stage. Cutting three times though means I use up almost 30 ft of rope each time I perform. That can get expensive!
One suggestion was to make a reuseable set. But I'm not sure about the end gimmicks. If I use a magnet, I run the risk of the ends sticking to the scissors when I cut, or sticking to each other in unpredictable ways during the routine. If I use screws, then I have to unlatch them as I "cut", which seems unnatural. Since the routine is about working in a spaghetti factory, I suppose I could simply "pinch" to cut - but in reality it _is_ rope and the audience knows that, so that move might be too much to swallow. Any suggestions for non-magnetic, non-screw gimmicks that might work for this? Ed |

I've never tried this, but I've heard that some people have had good luck with Rubber Cement. Yeah, I know --- it sounds CRAZY. But I've seen some pretty impressive results. Something to think about....

The best rope magic manufacturer in the world is Pavel, and he will make just what you want in an assortment of colors. He will not be cheap, but he will make you a custom rope trick that you can use for many years. I have his "junior walking knot" and he uses a method of joining the rope that you will be satisfied with. I can not talk about his method here, go to http://www.pavelmagic.com and send Pavel an email.

It should be a snap to make up a reuseable rope set

A 300' rope spool costs $45.00 at Abbott's Magic.
If you use say 5' of rope per show. 300' divided by 5' = 60 performances from a spool of rope per month. $45.00 divided by 60 = .75 that is 75 cents every time you perform the effect. Spending 75 cents pers show is not expensive to me, but I guess price is relative to each individual. ----------------------------------------------------- I recover that investment by increasing my fee by 75 cents for materials used. This is also tax deductible as well, so you will get the tax credit as well. ----------------------------------------------------- They also sell a heavier quality at $60.00 for 216'. This is thicker rope. 216' divided by 5' = 43.2 performances per month $60.00 divided by 43.2 = $1.39 per performance. That is getting way to expensive to just throw the rope away. I would have to find a way to recycle it, or it has to be a really great trick to spend $1.39 on my audiences. I favor the old style all cotton magicians rope and Abbott's is the only place I buy my rope from. |

I think that Ed is doing something closer to the Mongolian pop knot.

I don't ink it matters what rope cut or routine he does. If the rope is long enough to start (ala Whit Hayden), then that should last a couple of shows. You may lose a foot of rope. So, you should be able to salvage some rope. But, if you don't get paid enough for the shows, then size matters.
------ Rereading the original post, he says he actually cuts the rope twice, and on the third time he restores the rope. That being the case, my suggestion is to change the routine. I (and others) have the spectator cut the rope to make them even, and the lengths wind up uneven (but I still hold it. The by-play is that the spectator cuts the rope another time or two. Then, the lengths are finally even. This would be better than a failed two out of three cut routine.

Sorry I wasn't clear. (Hey - *I* knew what I was trying to say!)
This is a Prof Nightmare routine. I start with a large (50 feet or so) length of rope coiled in a box on the floor. I pull it out to measure and cut three equal lengths. (My job at the spaghetti factory is to cut the noodles to the proper length.) Then I do it again. I pull the rope out a third time, this time measuring for the PN lengths, and cut again. So I have cut three sets of ropes - two sets equal and one set "magic". It equals about 30 feet cut off. I was buying the 1/2-inch cored colored cotton rope from my favorite magic dealer for about 10 dollars for a 50-foot hank. That's about 6 dollars every performance. Not to mention a lot of wasted rope and repeated orders. Payne, your suggestion is most helpful and appreciated. Thanks! Al, I'll probably have to wait a bit before looking into Pavel's services. I appreciate all the input. Ed |

I think that you are trying to reinvent the wheel, look up the mongolian pop knot. You will really save big bucks if you use 1/4" rope instead of 1/2" rope. Payne's (Pavel) idea is a great one, but I'm not sure if those snaps are availible commercially. Payne is a very naughty boy. Most places sell the 1/4" (usually 7/16") rope for 10 cents a foot.

I've seen Whit Hayden's video of the Mongolian Pop Knot, and I really like it. My current PN routine is like it is because (a) I didn't have to learn anything new, and (b) it works well with kids (when I add in the hard hat, tool belt, safety glasses like these: http://www.halloweencostumes.net/jumbo-g......ose.html and chattering teeth).
(One of these days I'll get a web site with some video of that!) Ed |

I did my math wrong. Most rope suppliers sell 1/4" rope for 10 cents a foot, but my local supplier sells 7/32" crappy rope in place of the traditional 1/4" C&R rope that magicians know and love.

How about magnets and plastic scissors? Or a plastic knife? As for the ends sticking together - I think you just need to practice so they don't!

You use 30 foot of rope for 2 PN rope sets, seems a little long. Maybe you should reduce your lengths and save on rope that way.
I think the guys are correct, Pavel rope gimmicks are the only good way go on this type of handling. There are rubber cement as mentioned, and the other types are screw (delben or Abbott's) and magnets. There is one out from Europe but I don't know the method on that one. |

Maybe use precut rope, coiled up, and as you pick it up, you hold the cut ends concealed in your hand.
A few fake snips of the scissors, and you're good to go. |
