I think Ponta is remarkable with gaffed or ungaffed coins. Most times gimmicked coins make magi's look better than they might be handling regular coins and it most definitely allows them to do things they ordinarily might not be able to do and that's probably why such coins have a tremendous market. But Ponta can take either and make it look like real magic beyond the ordinary. I've seen many guys with gaff coins not look great using them, even though the magic they were created to make still works. Watch Ponta's hands, just beautiful movements that make gimmicked and ungimmicked coins all look like real magic, they actually sing. He is quite unique IMHO, technically much better gaffed or ungaffed than most big or small that I have seen, truth be told.

Garrett,
I had the same knee jerk reaction, but I went and looked at the video. An honest mistake. What is really impressive to me is that even a pricey gaff doesn't improve Ponte's stuff much. A very good worker. |

Garrett, Not a lot of magic in that video clip. Only cramped hands looking like they are holding out... Oh, let's say... coins. Couldn't hardly see the last coin anyway. Very Poor handling.
Mano's coin work is incredible. One of a kind. |

I've been studying 3 fly for many years I started out with kenners a few weeks after his book came out. Many variations have come to be...for full routines kurtz is hard to beat however once I got townsends work many years ago I learned the moat important thing which all of the 3 flys don't have and that is motivation and soft touch. Gimmicks or no gimmicks I haven't seen one that has that. Most people don't hold the hamds the way we Magi do therefore in reality this wonderful trick is going to be an exploration project for many including myself.
With all that said for me perfect consists of hands shown empty for each flight and coins examined prior and after the trick. Most important hands never touching. I came up with a way to get everything I wanted but can't show the hands freely on the final coin and I'm not talking about the vanish as anyone with basic magic knowledge can make a coin complelty vanish from one hand. The most important part of this trick or any trick is the entertqinment value ...lets see watch a coin will go from here to here. How is that entertaining in my book it is not. When I figure out my challenge I have an entertaining routine with proper patter timing and a solid trick until then it might take me another 18 years...but that is why its called the art of magic. If I wasbto perform it ibwould borrow quarters and do it organically ... Sickmagic! |

The original title here is about as close as you can come to the subjective "Perfect" Three Fly. I use the Franzis version all the time, and I have come up with a way to show the hands pretty cleanly between each flight. It does require soft hands and a great amount of practice to do smoothly, and together those will provide a great end-result.
Funsway also has some very interesting work on the subject and the routines are very well thought out and motivated! I have enjoyed them! |

Ya, not to beat a dead horse cuz Emmanuel is a terrific coin worker, but this 3 fly routine hardly does him justice. Sorry to say its pretty bad!
No sense of pause or timing or patter whatever; not very good displays between flights (none really); and most importantly to me with a three fly, he demonstrates no direction control over his audience whatsoever. Worse yet, I see his fingers manipulate the coins up during flights! No clean up at the end to sell the three coins only.....and... One of the worst 3 flight routines I have seen in a long time by a professional. A shame cuz he is soooooo much better than this!
To see a difficult thing lightly handled gives the impression of the impossible.

Mind you I do respect your view and opinion, nothing against it at all, but I have seen him do that routine more than a dozen times in person, exactly the same way every time, and nobody ever catches that. Even magicians. It is usually done more as a segue and not necessarily a stand-alone. As far as using it as a closer and needing to clean up, that is subject to a personal preference. Should he have given a way to do it in the instruction? Probably, but then again, Le Souffle d'Eole was meant for the more advanced coin worker... |

In fairness, I am sure he can do this better than presented and released in this clip, and I know him to be a terrific coin magician. But ya, this is a forum among magicians so that's why we analyze it. Were this played to lay specs it would probably impress many of them...but we know better i.e., this performance is far from perfect, its mechanical and cold - its just weak.
As far as a clean up at the end, I suppose you could say it is a personal preference as you say, I think though a little utility switch would also have strengthened it a bit... or something similar would have allowed his spectator to see the "same" original coins that he started with, at the end of the routine - coming to a full circle - just the way he started. that little cleanup would complete the routine nicely. Good discussion and I don't mean to be needlessly hard on this performance, but that's the way I see it.

Each vanish and each production is problematic. That first production was so awful. If some "nobody" posted that and asked for comments, people would rake it over the coals, but instead, since enough of you are friends with the guy, it is hailed...sigh

What about the other DVDs that are out there with a superb execution and performance of an effect is done on the DVD but in real life, that particular performer really stinks and the presentation is horrible? What exactly constitutes perfect? Nothing, really because it perfection and what constitutes something as being perfect, is completely subjective. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his demonstration in that video and too many people are concerned about proving something to an audience that they start to over-prove themselves. This is kind of like the un-necessary, excessive hand-washing that some card and coin manipulators do - and that in and of itself lends more opportunities to be caught. David Roth, Michael Rubinstein and Mike Gallo all have routines where they could use a clean-up at the end, but they do not because there is no inherent need. If you perform something for an audience and properly entertain them, simply implying that a hand is empty is more than enough to convince them that it is, in their minds. The fact that something is performed quickly or slowly does not always detract from its quality, its ability to look good/great or its ability to entertain an audience. Even the most boring effect in the world can be done by a witty and charming performer and be made to look like gold, especially if the performer is entertaining. |
