My first magic convention and I was like a kid in a candy store. Meeting all those great performers. Everyone was approachable and helpful. Seeing Ponta, Pit, Eric and all from 2 feet away in the lectures, you can't beat that.

As IMX ends - we need you help. We could not have done this with out your support and your feedback is critical for the future. We would truly appreciate you taking 5 minutes out and dropping us an email with your feedback ... 3 things you really enjoyed about the event AND 3 things that needed to be worked on.

Your input is valuable - please email them to us info@imx2011.com or you can use our online form option

Here is a quick review of MY experience. Everyone goes to conventions for different reasons and we all like different things, so some may disagree with me but here it is...

First of all, the Orleans convention area was great. All the rooms are close together but the whole area is up an escalator away from the hotel/casino. But it is still close to the restaurants. I did not even leave the hotel the first three days.

Dealers Room – There was a good mixture of dealers. It was in a nice big room so there was plenty of space. The negative for me was the short hours. With so much going on at this convention they need longer dealer hours. Plus, even when the room was open some of the dealers seemed to keep their own times. I heard that one dealer said it was one of his best conventions but I also heard others say it was not. The room never seemed overly crowded, but it was always busy when I was in there.

Lectures – The way IMX was set up you had to choose which lectures you wanted to go to because there may be 3 going on at the same time. About a month before the convention we had to sign up online for which lectures we wanted to attend. But once we go to the convention we realized you could go to any of them whether you signed up or not. I think this was for the convention staff to get an idea of which lectures would be full. Anyway, because you had to pick and choose I can only comment on the ones I attended. And most of the performers lectured 2-3 times so someone else may have reviews of the one they attened.

Rudy Coby – This lecture was packed. Even Kevin James (who is good friends with Coby) and Jeff McBride attended. It was a good lecture. It basically followed his lecture notes “How to Become a World Famous Magician” and his key speaking point was the “3 minute rule”. If you have a good act that is original all you need is 3 minutes and you can get booked tomorrow.

Tim Ellis & Sue-Anne Webster – This lecture only had about 10 people in it so it was very informal, which I liked. It was great having a front row seat watching Tim do “Runaround Sue” and he really fooled me with “Perplexity”. Tim and Sue-Anne are two of the nicest people in magic.

Timothy Noonan – More conventions should try to have lectures like Timothy’s. He is a working pro and he spilled the beans on the real work to getting corporate (or any other) gig. He did not teach any tricks but I am convinced if you take what he gave us and apply it then you could work full-time and make good money. He also had a killer deal for the IMX attendees that anyone would have been stupid to pass up.

Silly Billy (David Kaye) – David was a last minute add-on for the convention and I am glad. His lecture was very good if you do any kind of kids’ shows. It’s all about laughs-per-minute and David is killer. I have seen David at a couple of conventions and he was always nice, but he seemed to be having a great time at IMX.

Simon Coronel – I had never heard of Simon before but I was missing out. This guy is SICK. His lecture and performance was one of the highlights of the convention for me.

I also attended the Ponta the Smith and Chris Randall/Chris Bolter lectures. Both were very good but nothing really stood out for me.

Gala Shows – The opening show was on Monday afternoon. Ellis & Webster emceed and did a decent job. I think some of their skits fell flat on the audience though. Chris Capehart was a crowd favorite. He has great interaction with the audience. Boris Wild did a linking ring tribute to Richard Ross and his FISM Kiss act. Both were good but seemed to fall flat. Ivan Pecel, a juggler, stole the show of course. Juliana Chen performed her card manip act which was great; but it went downhill from there. She tried to juggle pillows with her feet and never quite got it right. She ended with an escape from a clear box that took FOREVER to set up, and then was anti-climactic. I felt really bad for her because she is usually world-class.

They had three professional close-up shows. These were held in the large ballroom and they had elevated seating which made it nice, plus video screens. I won’t go over all the acts but some of the highlights were:
- Simon Coronel’s coin work
- Michael Ammar’s perfection on the classics
- Ponta the Smith
- Shoot Ogawa – Every time I see him I am even more amazed. What a talent.
- Richard Sanders is hilarious
- Boris Wild changing his KISS act to a YMCA theme.

Closing Gala Show – David Acer emceed and this man is “pee in your pants” funny. Hayashi performed a samurai act where he cut cucumbers held by a spectator. The spectator was Justin Lee Collins, a British TV personality. Unfortunately, Hayashi meshed up his introduction and they were filming for TV.
Banachek KILLED with his mentalism routine. Lay people were walking away believing it was the real deal…hmmm…maybe….
An Halim performed his award winning card act that you have to see to believe.
Pit Hartling stole the show with his Heinz act. Soooo funny.
Illusionist Jason Bishop closed the show and he had no energy at all. It really ended on a downbeat.

In addition to all the lectures and shows, we had the opportunity to have dinner each night with the performers in the hotel buffet. Very cool to rub elbows with the greats in our art.

The David Berglas interview was good. I wish they could have gone another hour. Very nice of him to stay up till 2 am in England to do this. He was introduced by David Copperfield who we met earlier in the day in dealers room.

And in addition to Copperfield stopping by, some of the other names who dropped by: Jeff McBride, Kevin James, Johnny Thompson, Criss Angel, Amazing Jonathan, Jeff Hobson, Dan Sperry, Mac King, and Rick Thomas.

AND on the last night after the show they had all the performers lines up signing an IMX poster for each attendee. Very cool.

Overall this was a great convention and I hope they do it again next year.

Because of family issues and also relocating I had to miss the IMX. Smile

However, I will surely be at the next one - if Craig will have me. Smile
