I'm performing a kids show tomorrow morning that includes a time for games after my show. I like to give out prizes to both the winners and losers. Tomorrow I will be awarding crazy bands because they are inexpensive and the kids hold on to them like gold. I'll probably play kick the balloon in the can, musical chairs or hot potato. For those of you who offer this service, what are your favorite games and if you hand out prizes what has worked out best for you?

Prizes for everyone: yeah, I did that, too. Works great, especially when "spun" like "Who was the best? What, ALL of you? No, that can't be right, we'll try another game ... who was the best? EVERYBODY??? Okay, everybody gets a prize!"
With that in mind, games that aren't really competitive (or aren't very competitive, or that are clearly not serious) work best. A hop-like-a-bunny game (of course everyone is the best bunny), "a dance ... dance harder ... you can dance harder than that" game, a "make a stupid ugly disgusting yucky face" game. You might want to see my WEBPAGE on games. |

That's good information, thanks. I will think about the hop like a bunny, stupid ugly disgusting yucky face, walk like an animal etc. games if I see the kids are on the young side. This is a corporate gig where the kids are being entertained all morning by several entertainers. They start with a musical duo, then a magic show by me followed by a short game time (30 min. max). I'm being followed by a balloon twister who will finish out the morning. As you know, balloons never end until the parents drag their children away.

One of my favorite prices is the balancing butterfly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E30VCUGw1C4 I have an illustrated paper with the butterfly to cut out and an instruction, how to build it. My butterfly gets a burned match, glued by clear tape in the middle, the burned head symbolizes the head of the butterfly. Before I give out the prices the first time, I show a painted butterfly in action. When you make your own exemplar, take a pen or a pencil an make a depression near the head. When you show it in action, put the whole on a pencil and it will balance on it. Now you can blow and it will rotate. I print the instruction myself on paper, double as thick as normal. When I cut it in half, I have two instructions. I tell the children, the price is an instruction with the SECRET how its done. Then I give out only the sheet of paper but all children want to take part in the next game. |

A game that I often use for older children is guess how long a minute lasts. Get everyone standing up and demonstrate how fast a second is by counting with your watch) then get them to count silently in their heads for 1 minute and sit down when they think they have got to exactly 60 seconds (ahhh, peace and quiet!) I patter about not counting too slow or too fast and most importantly not to follow what their friends are doing! Whoever sits down closest to 1 minute gets a prize.

I split the kids into two teams so they win points throughout the party, then at the end of the show I make a magical production of sweets for everyone. That way you can award points for all sorts of things during the party. Also the kids don't have to keep hold of prizes till the end of the party.
I play musical monsters, a version of musical statues where when the music stop they pull monster faces, then best smile etc. I just add point to their team cup. At the end when I add up all the points they all end up winners!

Although everyones a winner is a good concept it is NOT good for real life which is VERY competative!!
I think aged 6-7 I would have been very annoyed if I won a game and there was no distinction between me and the losers!!! |

I'll make sure I have plenty of losers in my "Real Life is Tough So Get Over It" kid show.
