Hello all,
I have experimented with table tops over the years, big, small, thick, thin, heavy, light. I have always used a cloth so hasn't mattered what the table top looks like. Hey I even used a cupboard door for a while, which I picked up outta the rubbish. Anyway size? I see lots of acts use (in my opinion) really large table tops. Mine is and has been for a while roughly 30 cm wide and 50 cm long. I think I have one of the smallest out there. 2 reasons for this, 1: smaller/lighter better for travelling. 2: smaller means final loads fill up the space making them look bigger. What size do you use? reasons why? Any views ? Nick |

I use a large table (34"x20"), cups and loads. These give me the ability to actually walk around a bit behind the table, which is useful for certain bits of business. Yes it's a little heavier -but its a balanced load, so it's not all that bad.

For awhile I used the standard waiters table and stand but needed more table top space so I built a table top that was large like Gaddys, actually got the dimensions from Gaddys table. Thanks Gaddy!!! I used sheets of rubber as the foundation then covered it with Red billiard ball table cloth so no need for a close up pad. When performing the cups and balls and especially the shell game, more space just makes it easier to see, to perform on and to draw a crowd to.

Mine is 18" x 30". It has a 1/2" foam pad which is covered with black velvet. The velvet has been treated with Scotchgard®.
I like to have plenty of real estate to perform on.

I found sheets of rubber that I cut to fit the table top, several. Enough to make it better than a close up pad. Great for working the shells or coins. Glued the sheets of rubber on top of each other then after it dried, put the billard table cloth stretched to fit the top.

Sounds like bwarren and I have nearly identical tables. The billiard cloth... no wait, mine was called poker cloth... works great for the shell game, as well as fast and loose and just enough grip for card spreads. The rubber pad isn't spongy enough to be real squishy but has just enough give that I can get under cards easily to pick them up. I've made several table tops this way and have found nothing better. I covered one with naugahyde for working outdoors where there was risk of bad weather. Once I went back indoors the naugahyde came off and the poker cloth went back on.
My finished size is somewhere around 22x32

There are some pictures of one table I use to travel by bus or train, the table fits a small case, and I am happy with this system...
I did this table based in one I saw Mario Morris using (bottom part), his table is very ligth and portable... In this case I don't use the stand he used (more ligther), only a microphone stand, and a foldable top that fits the superior part of the case... Regards Eduardo |

Nice. It doesn't get much more compact than that.
