I'm not sure where the best place for me to post this, but I'm a magic hobbyist and I'm currently writing my dissertation on topics involving state lotteries. Since I get asked about this a lot in casual conversation, it opens up a good opportunity for me to break out my recently purchased Powerball60. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other good lottery-themed effects.

Danny Archer has $10,000 scratch-off tickets - when you scratch off the hidden area it says "4 of hearts" or some other playing card. You force a card, bet someone $10 or so that you can name it, and fail to do so. You discover that you're really broke, but do have a lottery ticket that you just bought and offer it as payment. I guess you can figure out the rest.

I think the BEST trick with lottery tickets is performed by the state of California, which uses them to get suckers to trade $1 for $0.33

I have two on my site: "Mystery Woman" from The Wizards' Journal #4, and "Lotto" from The Wizards' Journal #5. While not about state lotteries, both themes and methods could be adapted to appear as if they are from legitimate state lotteries.

In the "for what it's worth" category of lottery tickets I know of one or two occasions where family members actually got into arguments over a "winning ticket" I guess I'd just be careful where you use a lottery ticket effect. I've never tried them, so I'm also speaking from personal inexperience.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Anthony Owen includes one on his lecture DVD, can't remember it's name.
Scotish Mentalist Colin McLeod also has a couple, again, the names escape me. I'm sure there are loads more... |

You could of course use the classic '$100 dollar bill switch' to go from the lottery ticket to the money.

Cyberqat: Can't.... resist.... political .... comment.... Funny! I think the best one is that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at Math! Jim: I hadn't heard about the Danny Archer tickets (Lucky Lotto) before now. I think I have a place for that kind of effect. Thanks!
