Has anyone ordered a GTR? I don't see any mentions on the Café, other than the message from Steve Brooks to everyone else. I can't find any other mention of the "IT-K6" invisible thread that comes inside the reel. I'm curious about this one.

I gots to admit... I am not generally a thread head... But this don't suck! It is way easy to use. I gotta watch myself... I may end up liking thread stuff!

I ordered one and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. I'm just wondering why no one is talking about it. I'm glad to hear from someone who's already got it, Doomo. Are you able to give us an idea of what the thread's like? Say, compared to Kevlar and the woolly kind? Visiblity-wise, I mean. I know it's supposed to be stronger than Kevlar.

I got one from Steve recently.
I haven't got a chance to field test it yet,but so far in practice, I'm really liking it. The tension is great, I'm so used to the Sorcery reels( I have 4 or 5 sitting in a drawer). The tension/retraction on the Sorecery reels is hit & miss & the tension is not very good. I was also very pleased with how easy it was to get the thread out when it breaks,I had the thread break twice(because I couldn't see it)& it only took a couple seconds to get the thread back out. The magnetic alligator clips are great, the safety pins on the Sorcery reels always end up breaking off. The card box insert for the reel is great too,you can have the reel in the box & keep it in your shirt or suit pocket. The thread is very thin, very invisible & very strong. Steves Instructional DVD breaks everything down very nicely(it was shot by Wayne Houchin). It also comes with a crochet needle for making repairs I give it 4 out of 4 Thanks, Mike |

Everything Mike said... and yes, the thread is strong... I already took it apart... (I can't help doing that kinda thing...) it was easy. As to use... It hooks up about anywhere... But the thing it comes with is very cool. You will be liking this I think.
Tony..PS... I got no dog in this race... I just like well made and clever shtuff...

Anyone know about getting additional thread? I plan to break my thread every performance as part of the routine(s). Also, spare elastics rather than buy more and more refills or new reels?

Hi Gang,
Thanks for the kind words about the GTR. I’m very pleased to know that they’re working out well for you. I wrote out a quick FAQ that I intend to put on the GTR landing page but wanted to get started here with you guys: What is a GTR? The Grand Illusions Invisible Thread Reel Why is it better? The GTR is quiet and quick, uses no batteries and has one moving part. It’s large enough to be serviceable and small enough to conceal in a poker card-case. It smoothly feeds and rewinds IT-K6 thread. The GTR includes an instructional DVD produced and directed by Wayne Houchin and also comes with the custom made slide-tray. The GTR attaches to the performer with magnetically mounted, reversible alligator clips. Where does it come from? Grand Illusions – A 22 year old brick and mortar store in Northern California. The first invisible thread reels that used this basic design were launched at Grand Illusions in the early 1990’s. Grand Illusions has been making and selling invisible thread reels for two decades. The GTR is the product of that experience - It’s simple and it works. What is IT-K6? The chemical makeup is a trade secret but we can tell you this: IT-K6 is just as invisible as Sorcery’s “Invisible Kevlar Thread” but proved to be more than 20% stronger in stress testing. What is the Slide-Tray? The GTR mounts magnetically into a tray that is custom made to slide perfectly into a poker sized playing card box. The GTR operates from within the card box and can be used from your shirt pocket. Where do I get Parts? (Thanks for mentioning it, Daver!) Replacement cores, slide-trays, bulk IT-K6, wax and all other parts and accessories are available through Grand Illusions and will appear on http://www.Grandillusions.com just as soon as the webmaster (me) gets off his butt and does it. (Nothing but free time when you’re self-employed, huh?) Lou, I’m not sure what happened during your checkout…Email or call me and we’ll work out the Café deal for you! Lastly, while I’m VERY happy to hear all the praise I’m ready and willing to hear any problems or complaints. I’m not happy till you’re happy. I’m hoping that you have more questions. Post here or, if you like, email me directly: I’m steve@grandillusions.com. Thanks, again, - Sj

I can't seem to find the thread refills on the site. How does one go about ordering the refills?
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

Hi Steve,
broke my thread last night (stress testing before I take it to the public). Couldn't suck it out so I ended up dismantling the reel and starting from scratch. I found it very easy to do and the instructions on the DVD helped immensely. I am so glad I ordered the Pro Backup with the mag mount alligator clips I can swap out the whole reel in seconds and be back up and running almost immediately. Thanks for helping me out with some routine ideas too very much appreciated. Now the spare parts are available it looks like this is going to be a major part of my close up act in the very near future... Thanks again Tim

I received the Pro backup kit (2 reels with extra alligator clips, the card case insert and the dvd), and an extra insert. It is an excellent, smooth reel with very strong IT. The dvd was very thorough and helpful. Terrific customer service, too. Highly recommended.

Response to the GTR has been tremendous and positive. Many have asked me for additional ideas or routines for the GTR. To that end I've added a Videos page at http://www.Grandillusions.com/gtr (just click videos) and uploaded a demo and teaching video of my floating credit card routine, "Static Charge".
I'm hoping that others will record their ideas and routines with the GTR and we can expand this page into a collection of people sharing their GTR creations! Also, I (finally) added the accessories like the sliding tray, alligator clips and magician's wax. Thanks for your patience! - Steve Johnson PS:Thanks Michael and Tim for your kind words above!

Hi Steve:
Thanks for posting "Static Charge". One thought might be to password protect this teaching area of the site for those of us who have purchased the GTR. Robert magikbob |

Robert,
My pleasure on the post. Re: passwords - I thought hard about whether or not to "private" the youtube video or lock the videos page and ultimately decided not to. The end of my logic was two points - 1: An itr is nothing new and most everyone in magic knows what it is and how it works. An open page helps everyone with a reel, not just a GTR. 2: Those of us with GTRs are performing for people who don't Google magic secrets. If they've arrived at the Grand Illusions GTR video page, they're probably trying to learn magic, in which case we should teach them. That said, I've been wrong once or twice in the past. ;-) I'd be happy to hear counterpoint on the subject. - Steve

Steve, that is a great sentiment. I appreciate your generosity in sharing your ideas with the magic community. I am going to have to pick up one of your Pro Kits, the GTR sounds like a great improvement to the old ITR!

I did a stand-up/table hopping gig yesterday afternoon for the charity "Schools for Zambia" and tried out my Haunted Deck I am still working on a story but I have created a great hook-up through trial and error (probably been done before).
Anyway, to the real reason for writing (pun not seen at first but I'll leave it in...). At one table the I caught the thread somehow and it broke... I finished with another effect and no one noticed. Now I bought the GTR "Backup" Pro so I took out the reel leaving the mag mounted alligator clips in place and replaced it with the "Backup" reel onto the same clips in a flash. this might seem obvious to some but this was a miracle for me... I was back up and running by the very next table.

Tim, your post made my day. "...back up and running by the very next table" is EXACTLY what the GTR is all about. I'm thrilled to hear it.
John, I think there's a new Bermuda Triangle opening up somewhere in the Atlantic between California and Birkenhead. I've sent you an email from my personal account to first verify your shipping address. I'm befuddled by our postal service (or lack there of) but we WILL get you your GTR kit even if I have to swim it over there myself. - Steve
