Andy,
It's The Juggler of the Chateau D'eau from the French artist Charles Brocas (1774 - 1847.) Bri |

I always thought it was done was done by William Sams of London, from a "Tour Through Paris" (1822). It may be, however, that Sams was only the printer. I do know that Bob Read attributed it to Sams (see his "Cups and Balls in Graphic Art" and his interview on the Michael Ammar C&B DVD set).

Curious... I have to say that you are probably right, your knowledge of the historical aspects of the art far outweighs mine Fortasse.
I may have a picture ot the print I had which had the info on the bak. Let me see if I can find it (being hopeful as he never files anything correctly on his hard drive!) Bri |

Fortasse,
I have found the picture I was looking for (magic in itself!) at the bottom it states; "Published by W Sams, 1 St James Street 1822." Hope this helps. Bri |

Sorry, you can't quite make out the tiny writing where it say's "Published by ..."
If you would like me to email you the full size file you can zoom in and (just) read it. Kindest, Bri |

It's neither a painting nor a stencil. It's an engraving that has been hand colored.

Thanks, Bri. I have the identical print as well. It looks like you're right about Brocas if the inscription on the back of your copy is correct. It thus appears, contrary to what Bob Read said, that Sams was only the printer or publisher of the prints. Thanks much for this information.

I am getting this copied by a painting copy company in China, I'll send a pic of the results, the last two they did was pretty exact.
