Jay Sankey's trick isn't free anymore, he mailed me. It's available on http://www.sankeymagic.com/detail.aspx?ID=48062

Don and Baboum,
Thanks for the kind comments about the book. Everyone else, I'm pleased that you enjoyed the presentation. The effect was born out of looking for an answer to the Paul Curry problem. This did not immediately come to life. As simple and elegant as it is, it took many years of tweaking and playing with before I was able to boil it down to its most basic form. I talk a little bit about this in the book. This fills a nice need in my close up tool case. It allows a nice presentation, with minimal props. It takes up very little space. It is simple to understand and follow. It can be a simple fun moment or you can make this a heavy stunner. I have another video on my FB page showing a woman totally freaking out over this. I edited out the heavier presentation part (for personal reasons) but you do see the dealing and revelation. It was quite strong. In my book, I talk about a few of the variations I experimented with before settling in this one. Also, I am unaware of the Jay Sankey effect that has been said is similar to mine. Since this is a very basic, straight forward effect, it would not be surprising that many people have tread this path before. There are many ways to take this effect, I have played with so many and can give you the pros and cons of them. One is to use word cards, so that each word you deal over has a special meaning, then when they stop you on a word you can tell them why they stopped you on that one. The next card you turn over would then say "You will stop here". The permutations can go on and on...but there are reasons why I use the simple playing cards.

Christian, a very nice effect and a very engaging presentation. That alone would want to make me see more of your performance.
Baboum, you are coming across as an ignorant and arrogant buffoon. For that reason I have nothing to say to you.

Putting any animosities in the discussion to one side, the effect is a very good one, very punchy, and within the skill range of pretty well anyone in terms of the mechanics. And yes, I know of other tricks that use the same basic elements (mind you, it's highly likely that 100% of the tricks I know have elements in common with other tricks), but as Christian Painter's post above notes, the key points are
"It allows a nice presentation, with minimal props. It takes up very little space. It is simple to understand and follow." It's the skill in putting those together that I admire in this trick (along with others in the Protoplasm book). It's simple, it's efficient, and it's flexible. |

First regarding the "animosities" in the thread.
its a forum about mentalism. mentaslim is what I care about. mentalism was my question. why do so many people here think that their opinion other than mentalism could be of any importance is beyond me. regrding the effect. its "refreshingly " direct, simple, easy to understand from teh spec point of view". and from those attributes, it borders perfection. there is an essay in the book, which I find so totally " spot on " about the purpose of what we do, which is ultimately to entertain. so very different from the main the main "boring" view that so many people here seem to share. mentalsim can be 1) boring, 2) entertaining... you gotta chose your side comrade. gotta buy the book to read more. oh and btw, for those who believe I'm ignorant newbie.... enjoy yourselves. once again thanks Christian for a brilliant book. its not often I can say that.
