Tarbell is a great resource. Same with Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. These are not kids books. They were written for serious adult professionals and hobbyists.
Al, you must have friends who own it, leaf through one and you'll see the value. It's like looking through a catalogue but with methods. Some of it looks dated but it is a treasure trove of good ideas and help for problems, including this thread. - Mary Mowder |

Question: The Rice site only shows volume 3 for the Encyclopedia. Is that just the latest version, or are all three volumes totally different? Thanks,
Jim

Yup, and if I can't find them all, I am not getting one- it will always be missing what I am looking for...

I kust read about volume 4, and it was added 30 years after the first three volumes. It contains 9 chapters of silk magic, an extensive index of all four books, and the Harold Rice stroy.

Carpet baggers
That's a real joke. Over the years I have bought a LOT of snake oil from magic dealers, and inventors. The carpet baggers were here before any of us got here. I'll never forget the time I bought a $10 trick, and after I handed the man his money he handed me an envelope, which contained a xerox coppied sheet of paper with the trick on it. LOL

It saves me a lot of time when I am looking for something to just do a search on the index pages before I go dragging out the wrong book. Also you'll notice that my main interest is in identifying the inventor or originator of each effect for citation and research purposes. This gets you to Volume 1 and you can find the other Volumes from there: http://www.magicnook.com/forum/project.htm

Why do you recommend the Rice dye tube, and do I want the whole set?

Lord sakes, Spellbinder, where has this site been all my life? I am astounded at the amount of work involved in just the Rice info! This will be fun to explore.
I don't do much silk work at present, mostly ropes in that regard. However, it looks like a good place to be what with all the exposure in other areas of magic. I will peruse your site for what is in volume 3, and probably start with that unless someone (a) has a better suggestion and (b) knows where to buy the other volumes. I have not looked at Amazon yet... Much thanks for the indexing of the Rice books! Jim
