I'd really value your opinions on my site that I recently gutted and rebuilt. I hope this is okay ask this, as it's not really my magic site, but my digital business. However, I value the insights of many who frequent Tricky Business, so I hope this is alright!
I posted this site a LONG time ago, got some great feedback, and applied your advice. This is the result. Here's the site: http://DigitalBlacksmiths.com My main concern is the copy (I'm fond of the graphics, too, but the copy is where I'm placing my focus right now). Thanks, Scott |

Scott:
Your site acted funny when I tried to go there. The index page came up without any background or layout - almost like a mobile page. The address bar had: http://digitalblacksmiths.com/?utm_sourc......relaunch I took some screen shots - I hope they are helpful. http://www.edandhismagic.net/Stuff/image001.png http://www.edandhismagic.net/Stuff/image003.png http://www.edandhismagic.net/Stuff/image005.png http://www.edandhismagic.net/Stuff/image007.png The last is the News page, which came up fine. To be fair, this is on my work computer, and I have no clue what kinds of filters and other junk they've pushed on here. And I don't have any clue how to tell you! Ed |

I looked at this site yesterday, when you referenced it on another string. It is nicely layed out, and like that you do not have all those moving graphics.
The problem I have is I could not tell what you are selling or advertising. I yelled at my computer saying what is this stuff, and where do I find what this site is about. A site like a brochure should tell the visitor, who, what, where, how, and why. I could not get past the who and what question easily and fast. Hope this helps. |

You the man. That's interesting how IE handles it. I think I know what's causing that. Gotta fix that quickly.
This is what it should look like: And a subpage: As far as the lack of obvious purpose for the site, I agree the site did have a huge problem in that regard, which is why I went in and rewrote all the copy for the entire site. This update happened late yesterday. Was the version you saw this morning the same as what you saw yesterday? I ask because much of the copy was changed since yesterday. If you are referring to what's up this morning, that means I didn't do what I had intended with the new copy and it's back to revisions! Scott |

Ed, I think I might have figured it out. I had the wrong directory set for a conditional style sheet that pointed to nothing. Could you see if it looks better?
Thanks for your time! |

When it first opens, I get a momentary flash as it should be - then all the background and DIVs vanish! BTW, it's IE 7, so it's probably fine in the real world!! 8>)

Ok. Thanks for the update. IE7 helps narrow it down. But that's still about 10% of my traffic, anyway. So off to the chalkboard to fix it!

I did manage to read some of the blog posts (Flash and HTML, Content Creation). Very nice writing! The only item I might suggest is to put your ending "personal blurb" in italics or otherwise set it off.
Everything else is written in first person, and then those last three sentences are in third person. A second later, the reader of course understands that this is the author bio. But it does take that fraction of time, and does insert an interruption into the thought flow. Ed |

Why no name capture or video on the landing page?

OK Scott,
A few things 1. I want a caricature 2. (and I say this because it's you and I know you can do it) use CSS and add a banner that is 25 to 50 pixels tall at the bottom of the page that is a dark translucent color, with a Link to "Book your Event" and a signup for your newsletter.. Kinda like I am doing for MMG's newsletter http://www.marketingmastergroup.com (I scrapped it last week and started over, just starting to blog again) 3. no that's it.. add a clear "Call to action" Love the site.. And I want like 5 of them to use as Blog icons and such LOL heck what would it cost to get a set for my Education blog and my Balloon Site?? SHEESH.. I need to find a artist now to get doing this LOL Scott why do you always make me think... (and now spend money) Your one of my favorite ppl on here and my wife hates you because now I can justify buying an IPAD LOL
its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite

Haha, Mike.
First, thanks everyone. Ed, that was a CSS oversight. Forgot to include the line in the CSS sheet. That's fixed. Great catch. Thanks for the kind words about the writing. Name capture is coming. I found out the hard way that my last form wasn't sending all the names, so I was losing leads! Arg. Mike, nice idea about the translucent Action bar. Nice thinking! Funny about the caricatures! Email me sometime. Thanks again, everyone! |

Scott, again I did check the site before my previous post. I will try to explain. The word blacksmith, means you make horse shoes, but you show a beautiful Girl that woman with an Ipod, so are you selling Ipods or horseshoes.
Then I see a caricatures, are they for the Ipod? So is this an Ipod site that makes things for the Ipod display. How do you know what I look like to draw a caricature of me. If this is the case, then the title of the page should say something like. Want a crazy caricature of yourself on your Ipod? Or, We design custom Charicature for your Ipod! Or, IPod caricatures just for you! If I am wrong, then I still don't get what you are selling or promoting, sorry! The reader should not have to figure out what you are selling or saying. They will move on before they have to think. |

Like a previous post, I use IE 7. I get a flash of your stylesheet but then it goes to just text and your pics. No background.
They pics you posted look great. |

It also looks like IE7 doubles your posts, too. *grin* Just kidding.
Can I say the stylesheet going to text only is a feature, not a bug? Weeds out all those legacy browsers? *grin* Guess not. Thanks for the heads up, Michael. I'll look into that. I can only use IE8 on my XP machine (which is a running on my Mac under Parallels) so my Windiows access is, thankfully, limited. And I think I fixed the headline to more clearly articulate the site's objective to prospective clients. Thanks again everyone. |
