This topic may be more appropriately posted elsewhere, but I thought I'd try here first and let the screeners decide. I'm curious if mentalists have seen the US TV crime series, The Mentalist, with lead character mentalist, Patrick Jayne, (played by the personable Aussie actor Simon Baker) assisting California cops in solving crimes. I'm enamored with the series, now two seasons old, I believe. Though I'm curious how you mentalists perceive it? I'm not a "real" mentalist, but I have several mentalist effects that I absolutely cherish and do use. The character employes his mentalism abilities in solving crimes and displays tricks of the trade, including the sprinkling of a few magical sleights here and there. I'm amused that the character leaves you thinking, is he for real, or just doing mind tricks? Isn't that what the mentalist really seeks? I'm personally thankful that Hollywood has given with a show with mental/magical elements, yet retaining the whodunit theme. Just curious about y'alls thoughts on the show. My limited mentalist abilities are telling me that I'll hear from the purists amongst you with comments such as "Poppycock!" .... but I still look forward to those too. Best, Bob

I watched the first season and I really enjoyed it because it is obvious that the director knows about NLP and non verbal communication; since the actors do as if they were really thinking the stuff the mentalist perceives.
I am looking forward to watch the second season. Giovanni. |

It's an enjoyable show. I like watching it. There's really no mentalism, or what we would consider mentalism, on the show. During the intro to my stand-up show I mention the TV show and most people in the audience nod, acknowledging that they watch it.
The show has also produced bookings for me because people have seen the show and they're looking for something different for their event that year. This fall will be the start of the third season and personally, I'm looking forward to it. |

I personally really like this show. The first half of the second season was amazing. I think it's good tv and it helps promote the art of mentlalism in a good way.
Also, I believe that Luke Jermay is one of the consultants for the second season and or the third season. So you know it's legit.

I jumped on it when the programm goes out, and stopped watching it after 3-4 opus.
- Concerning mentalism, there are some few part where it shows us that the author know the subject or has been helped, but it is so thin that it cannot really give me anymore feeling that "ok a reference to this or that technic". No relief. - Concerning the investigation part, and the relationship between characters, it is slow, spineless, and boring to death (to my mind). For those to reason, I'm sorry for sexy Patrick Jayne but his mentalist performance let me ... completly cold. Less "mentalist" oriented but in the same area, I much prefer "Lie to me" serie. Still completly fictitious, but with a better rhythm and more funny. |

I like it as just a bit of fun and entertainment.
It's like a sleek Jonathan Creek. It also reminds me of the episode of Columbo where he investigates a murder that revolves around a scientist who works at "The Anneman Foundation" working on ESP. But without the mack. |

Thanks for the reference Paul. That episode was nice. And by the way Columbo is a must concerning the suspense and the quality of investigation. Far away from Patrick Jayne. Give me a columbo mentalist

I watched the first season and really liked it a lot. I watched a few episodes of the second season and had lost interest.
I to thought of it as sort of an updated Columbo (which I also love).

It's mainly a detective show, so I lost interest after the first season. Really very little mentalism elements in the show.
But, maybe that is a good thing. Keeps our art in the shadows. JerryB |

Interesting comments. I'll check the Café for the other threads in here as well. For the record, no one will ever top Columboin my opinion. Though I never thought of him as a mentalist, just a very clever detective.

The director has a very simple understanding of mentalism.
