Just wondering, how many magic/mentalism books Café members have purchased in the past year or so? I'm not interested in the titles, just mumbers.
I know as I've gotten older my book purchasing decreased dramatically as I already have a good working library and extensive performing repertoire. Unless someone is simply a magic book collector that is natural. In my early years I usually left every convention with several books, and dealers like Magic Books By Post were one of my first ports of call at large UK conventions. In 2009 I bought four books. So far this year only 1, but I'm sure there will be possibly another 1 or 2 before the end of the year, or that I'll make up for the shortfall at Blackpool in 2011 I've stopped making lists of book desires, they get too long - and my memory now filters titles out naturaly throughout the year. I think it would be more telling for people to list how many books they have purchased AND how many years experience they have. Like in your case, the longer one has been involved in magic, the more books you own, therefore the fewer you will buy each year. This would be a good benchmark.
I've been involved seriously for 6 years and bought 9 books last year.

I've been involved in magic since the 70's and still purchase a lot of books. I've bought at least 2 dozen
books this year. Some were big hard cover books and others were softcover ones. While some of the books are newly released r like "Vortex", others have been OOP books that I've managed to find on Ebay, The Café or from one of the many dealers who specialize in these types of books. I Still need to get "One Degree". Craig

I typically order 2-3 new books per year but some years may peak at 6-8 books (which typically includes older used books). Over a time span of 20 years, magic is not an inexpensive hobby.

It depends...I always have a novel and a magic book on the go, sometimes for the tricks, sometimes for theory or just general background, so it depends how much time I spend on each book. I'd guess during the past year maybe 10-12 or so (one of which was Magic from the Overground incidentally).
Not many top magicians come here, with a few exceptions, so instead of being able to spend money on a ticket to see them, my 'entrance ticket' money goes instead on getting to know their work through books. I usually get what I feel is my money's worth (being a good Scot, naturally), and if you're not in a desperate rush for a particular book, you can get some good prices. |

I have bought eight books over the last 8 months. Intend to buy a couple more by this year end. Since international shipping isn't cheap I tend to buy 3-4 books at a time to save on shipping costs and take advantage of festival offers and freebies.

I have bought up to 10 per year. This past year, I probably bought 3 or 4.
It is not so much that I have all the books on my "want" list. It is because the books I now want are much more expensive. |

With the relative paucity of "physical" books these days, my purchases have turned more to e-books, and there is some great magic in them. If more physical books would be published, I would buy them, believe me.
That said, there are TWO books I have been waiting eons for: Magicana, and Mr. Jennings Takes It Easy, both by Richard Kaufman. One can only hope .............. Sadly, DVDs and e-books are really dominating, with DVDs at the fore. So, if the question included e-books, the answer would be embarrassingly high Namaste, Vlad |

5-7 books per year, that is including hunting down 1st edt. one of my best finds was getting Hooser's DesTroyers especially being OOP.
And since it hasn't been mentioned about 3-5 ebooks. Also buying directly from the author sometimes, they can sign it. very cool when they do! |

I have started to read magic books about five years ago. Before that it was just a few DVDs.
In those five years I have bought a bit more than 100 books, not counting any small booklets and such. So that would make it about 20 books a year. A large part of those 100+ arrived in one big chunk, when Christoph Borer sold his entire library and I handled a bit of this sale. So I was first in line to pick up around 35 books at once. I have to admit, though, that about 10-15 of those books have not been read yet! What a shame =(

To give you a mumbers , this last year some where over a 100. I read a lot. now this list includes mentalism, ebooks, printed, manuscripts, notes, works on metaphysics, psychic, psychology, occult and early pitch books. My personal library collection is very large. For example a few months ago I cleared out about 90 books on fine art and 50 on antiques as I started to run a bit tight on space for the good stuff.

A few years ago, I was buying about 100 books a year for a few years to build a collection, but I got married and had a baby and bought a house last year, so now I only buy 4 or 5 books a year. I've been performing about 30 years now.
