Does anyone have a link or video of Kalin performing the Impaled on That's Incredible?

I'm with you Wan, I'd really like to see that performance. Surely many magicians have that in their library, I'll ask around, I know a few magicians with an extensive vintage video colection.
The one you have, you say is the very one or is the same model as the one he used? And who built it? |

It is that one impaled that he used as I was told by Zigmont. He owned it after Mark.

I believe Kenny Whitacker built Mark's original one himself. I would love to see the original presentation of the impaling for the rock group Ken created all the magic effects for. I've heard it was still the best use of the effect to date!

I worked for several years with one of David Copperfield's former assistants and she called the illusion "Dick on a Stick". Lol. I don't know if David knew that's what it was nicknamed.

Lol... I did hear that as well! That was the crew's switch on the name "chick on a stick" that was in inside use at the time.

One of the hardest illusions in magic to perform, period!
Every time I work with Darren Romeo, this illusion requires the most concentration, timing, and precision, checking and re-checking. nerve wracking but rewarding, especially when he sings while impaled!! Vinny |

I would certainly say it is the hardest in Darren's collection. Many illusions have their mechanical challanges and this one has quite a few!

I have owned several of these things over the years. The one we use now from time to time is the one that Les Smith Built for Jonathan Pendragon. The harness is so good that its like a medical device. I have had a new harness made by Owen and it isn't even close. This is because the metal choices used by Les and the meticulous detail orientation he as well as Jonathan had can't be beat. Getting the harness right with the builder requires multiple fittings and stiff metal in the bar that goes around the assistant. Most of the metal used now is not stiff enough to hold the gimmick in any position even resembling straitness. I have done the trick when it looked absolutely horrible and then had some direction and work in order to really sell the balancing act idea and then it worked. The fit that the Pendragons had is just so much simpler and so much better because of the choices of Les Smith and Jonathan. Also keep in mind the level of fitness of them as a couple when they did this illusion. Even the new stuff I have got can't compete.

This is one illusion that I won't even play with. I've seen a couple right up close and I know what is involved. I guess I've seen plenty of bad performances of this illusion too.
Leave this one to the pros .. the select few that can really pull this off, if not .. it's laughable. Steve |

I love this illusion!
And I've also heard many stories of magicians or assistants having serious back problems after doing this 6 days a week, twice a day! From what I've heard, the most important thing is that it's built right, if built wrong, it will screw up your show, your back and likely your reputation.. What I mean by 'built right' is, you can't just come crashing down on the blade, you should drop, and for the last inches you should slow down, for me that is truly the meaning of being impaled, you can see it in so many Hollywood movies, where someone falls on a spear and he slides down in a very brutal way, but for the last few inches he's slowing down and dies.. That's how this illusion should look like to me. I've also been told it's not very practical, and (again) if not built right, you can have a very embarrising thing happen to you before you've even started the illusion! Definately on my wishlist! |

They were billed as "magicians" but in talking to them, their magic knowledge was a little limited. They were definitely fans of magic and worked very hard at bringing their character and the allusions to life. In fact, many people thought that Sorcery was the genesis of the show concept for Dick Foster and Willie Betek's productions of "Spellbound" with the dueling magicians. I actually have a copy somewhere of the film which documents a majority of their act called "Stunt Rock" and also the video of their concert as well. I was never a huge fan of the illusion although it is certainly clever. Its growth is actually quite interesting. Kenny put it into Sorcery. Kenny also created Dirk Arthur's original act with the fantail pigeons when he was a junior magician at the Magic Castle. Mark Kalin new Kenny from there and when he decided to start doing illusions he had Kenny build the effect for him. We were rehearsing the show at Blackstone's warehouse which was about 100 yards from Owens. The large rollup door was always open and Alan and the guys would frequently come over to see what was going on. They saw the illusion and made some arrangement with Kenny to put it in their catalog and once they started advertising and selling them it was the new hot item that everyone had to have. There've been so many permutations of the effect including swords, knives and even syringes. As much as I've been involved in many versions of the effect, it just never seemed right for me but it's just a matter of your style and character.

If anyone is interested in seeing a self-impaling device my old company, Shadow Magic & Illusion designed and build for magician Austin Brooks, PM me with you email address and I'll send you photos. Les Smith originally gave us the idea when we purchased the Impaling illusion for the Pendragons in 1985.
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I am no longer using the impaled that the Pendragons had built by Owen and Les Smith. I am willing to sell it if a young act wants to refurbish and use it. Works great mechanically and in rough cosmetic shape. message me or email scott@hypnosisconnection.com. It needs a home for someone uses it. should be a young performer and assistant. The whole act doesn't look quite right as it gets used by middle aged or older folks.
