Federal election today and every Australian over 18 has to vote or face legal penalty (a small fine). In the past, non-Australians have told me it's

a) shocking to compel a citizen to do anything
b) possibly not a bad idea
c) a good idea
d) a bad idea because it forces/allows 'idiots' to vote.

Personally, I don't find it unreasonable to ask those who benefit from our form of government to participate in it once every 3 years. And, if you have philosophical objections to voting, you are not actually compelled to vote - you just have to show up, get your name ticked off and stuff a bit of unticked paper into a ballot box.

Thoughts?

I remember a short story in which a guy sees the cops coming for him and makes a break for it. After a grueling run, they catch him. And formally declare that he's been drafted to act as President of the United States for the next four years.

(Apparently, the concept was that they'd decided to determine who was best for political jobs and force them to take them rather than trust the people who actually wanted the position.)

Good idea if the no-vote ballots were counted and if they were a plurality would force a new election with new candidates.

Do they tally the no-vote ballots there?

Otherwise I think compulsory voting is a bad idea. As the saying goes, the lesser of two evils is evil.

Yes, they are counted, but they don't get included in final vote tally. Last election I think they were around 4% for the House of Reps, a bit less for the Senate.

The Reps have a preferential system of voting so sometimes candidates win on the primary vote being over 50% and sometimes by preferences from other candidates.

I'm not a fan of the idea, but if you're happy with it, more power to ya!

I think it's a good idea

in my experience a lot of smart people don't vote, maybe now if they did they would get what they want!
people don't vote sometimes because they don't want to vote for anyone, go and spoil the ballot. if the number of people who didn't vote spoiled the ballots, i.e. over 50% they might rethink who was running!

also I think people can't complain about a government if they haven't voted (at least go and spoil the ballot) and also if the person was elected in the system they have set up.

Good idea, except in this age of computer ballot fraud.

No matter what idiot you vote for there today the Communist Green Party are going to be the king makers by all accounts, so you might as well not vote and go to jail because that’s where you are going anyway.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

No computers here gaddy. Paper, pencils and cardboard booths with no curtains or handles to pull.

Is not the whole point of having a "vote" to have a choice? It seems to go against the spirit of the very process to require it.

Have at it!

Brings in the 'goof vote' which are people who will vote for who they think will be the funniest if they win because they usually are the worse candidates.

Oh great a bunch of know nothings being forced to vote for people that they never heard of. That's a sure way to get the best candidates elected.

I'll not vote this next election because no one running deserves my vote here in Nevada.

Remember that old saying "if you don't vote you can't witch". I look forward to casting my vote in the Pennsylvania senate race.

Interesting election. As of last count, Labor has 70 seats, a possible Liberal-led coalition has 71 and four more are still being counted. Interesting times in Australia.

Personally, I like minority governments.

Know nothings vote constantly Al. It is why we elect the people we do. But the beauty of America spacifically is that you can complain if you don't vote. The Constitutional right of free speech is not based on voting.

OK, I'll state it a different way:

If you don't vote, you shouldn't complain about the government you get.
