I like this one best: http://youtu.be/AoTqKJOBrQI it's by Jim Abrahams. The key problem with most assemblies is the space issue. You cannot do it in between napkins and glasses. I work fairly quickly. But you can be quite slow and magical about it. In terms of practicability.... well FASDIU.

I do Marlo's Bluff Ace assembly. I love how you can do the last ace twice as a kicker

Bannon's Four Shadow Aces is the one I prefer. Impromptu. No setup.
David Regal's Royal Jazz Quartet is also a fun one. Also impromptu. |

Let's not forget Guy Holligworth's Ace Assembly. I have performed this and got great reactions for magicians and non magicians.

I really enjoyed this post and all the video links! I'm not sure why, but I always feel a book on card magic is not quite complete unless it has some sort of assembly routine. Not sure why that is, but I've never been able to shake this feeling.
Here are a couple non-gimmicked assemblies I really like which I don't remember seeing above. There is a version in the Hierophant (by Marlo, I think) called (if I remember correctly) "Almost Like Using Trick Cards" and it looks just as the title claims like you are using trick cards but it does not. There is also an ace assembly I really liked done by Paul Wilson on one of the L&L sampler DVDs. It was not only a very clean, direct ace assembly, but it also had an interesting gambling presentation. Does anyone know what routine I am referring to? |

I used to get into the John Bannon Assemblies but my memory fails me and I have to relearn them.
I now do Marlo's Bluff Assembly, simple and super easy. It's on the Malone Meets Marlo DVDs. Malone has a nice touch for revealing the last ace. Here is a video of somebody doing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Gu8sIjlPU |

"Wilson's Aces" by R. Paul Wilson. It's not a slow-motion assembly, but it's quite fair.

I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread about a "friendly argument" that I got into with Larry Jennings at The Magic Castle....I remember it was in October of 1985...I was having a drink at the bar with the late Neil Lester and doing some tricks with an A and W Deck....and Neil had no idea how I had an A and W deck in play and was baffled, and went over to Larry Jennings and said "Larry I want you to see what this guy is doing"....so Larry said "sure" and walked over and he introduced himself to me, and I said " I've always wanted to meet you as I'm a great Dai Vernon disciple, too"...and so Larry said "Great...show me something'...so I did another trick with the A and W deck....Neil Lester again was baffled, and Larry, being Larry, knew right away what I was doing, but politely watched...
So then I asked Larry what, in his opinion, was the GREATEST VERSION OF ACE ASSEMBLIES EVER?....and HE replied..."Vernon's Open Travelers"...and I said please show it to me...he did...and it was beautiful....then I told him that I respectfully disagreed with him as I felt that Don England's version, called Open Travelers Plus published in Best of Friends, was THE FINEST ACE ASSEMBLY EVER.... then Larry asked me to do it....and I did.....and a lot of magicians were standing around now because of the discussion and back and forth that Larry and I were having at the bar and that it was pretty unusual for anyone to challenge Larry on his knowledge of card magic... The magicians there watching us GASPED when they saw the kicker...which uses a brilliant OLRAM subtlety to pull it off.....It was a fun night!!! Later, Rich Bloch came up to me <he was watching all of this>....and said..."You have cojones!...No one ever argues about card magic here with Larry Jennings, but you did, and you WON THE ARGUEMENT...we both laughed and sat down in the close up room at around 1 am in the morning doing tricks that you can only do with an A and W deck..... In all sincerity, it is my honest belief that this is one of the most beautiful and beautifully-executed card tricks ever.... TAKE A LOOK AT THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTcORp6GxvY |
