RK,
Osterlind says the same thing. While it's still not part of my personal style to say questions like that - why shouldn't it seem fair? - it is my understanding that Maven and the like employ the phrase after having done something. In this case, Ferguson simply informs the spectator of his intended "digging deep into their subconscious". There is no rationale to follow this with "is that fair?". It's redundant. |

I will also add that it's dangerous to assume that professionals revered in the magic community don't possess presentational flaws or say silly things. Most of the time, they are so regarded because of their original effects and/or methods, not for their logical and engaging presentation.

I agree that it was obviously used irrationally in this example, but I don't think the question itself is all that bad. If you are doing something questionable, don't ask if it seems fair. But if it seems to be fair, the audience members remind themselves, after the effect is over, that you went over how fair it was, step by step. It makes the feat seem that much more impossible, when used correctly.

Although there may be a lot of stuff here for beginners I wasn't a huge fan.
And I hate to say it but it was the performance that put me off the most. I have no doubt that Rich is a worker but I wasn't loving his style. I might try again in a few days. My two cents.

I just watched most of this last night. I found his equivoque was just as bad as the magicians he criticized. He will shift from using not using the spectator's choice to using his choice rather than the more appropriate style of planning out the wording used so that it appears to be quite natural such as Arce's Scorched and Colin McLeod's Kolintrol (which ingeniously also uses multiple outs). There are so many resources that teach how to use equivoque properly -- by Maven, Berglas or even our own Sam Catoe -- there's no excuse to use such a rambling, meandering 'technique' of Ferguson.
The book peek was fine but his method of gleaning the information was likewise incoherent and rambling. Even the spectator that examined the book to 'make sure it was just a book' appeared suspicious at that point. Window was good but obviously not original as he implied. At least they cut in credits after the fact but it would have been nice if Rich credited the lineage of this gimmick. I have seen much better presentations of the 10-card poker deal. This was repetitive and he gave no reason why he should be winning all of the hands. He never claimed he was influencing the spectator or any other explanation making his whole presentation fail at the basic level. He started off fine with talking about his real life poker success but misses a great opportunity to tie it altogether with explaining what mental ability lets him win at poker. Alpha Pack was Osterlind ODDS without credit. |

On the night of the Harry potter premiere a younger magician came to my group and totally murdered paperback prediction. My co workers and friends saw straight through the method. He also performed the math square.... Confusion is not magic

I have 4 of Ferguson's DVD's and I am very pleased with them. No, of course I don't use every effect, but even if you use one or two, it is worth it!
