I have seen versions of the Mismade Girl performed with four, three and even two boxes. Which version do you prefer, and why?
I lean toward the original, four-box version, because it just seems to divide the assistant in the most logical places. I have seen a three-box version whenere all three boxes were different heights that wasn't too bad, but I have also seen one where the three boxes were the same height, and the girl seemed to be split strangely.

I used the 4 box version. This meant 3 were in motion during the take apart/put together. If desired, the base can be spun around at the same time (although that requires another assistant). To me, 4 boxes makes it seem as if ALL the pieces are smaller (which they basically are), and good choreography with the assistants man-handling the boxes can make their necessary "secret" action quite unnoticed. There is a lot of action happening at the same time.
But the bottom line is truly the bottom line... a good base.

Drop Chuck Jones a note, the often uncredited inventor of this much copied effect. He still performs it and still uses 4 boxes. I'm sure he will echo Michael's thoughts on "many pieces in motion" and "more pieces make each look smaller"

There's also the practical aspect. Divide the Mismade cabinet into more boxes and it decreases the hiding space. Divide it into fewer sections and the boxes get bigger, heavier and harder to handle gracefully.
Four seems just about right. Chuck knows his business. |

To restore the girl, do you prefer reassembling the boxes in the correct order, or just changing the numbers around?

In my opinion, the changing of the numbers make it a magic effect, and kind of more puzzling.

The version I used had to be reassembled, but I am familiar with both.

I've always used the 4 box version.. It was always hard work.. but I love the effect and the illusion has bajillions of routine possibilities..
We did a Keystone Cop routine..., but mad scientist... puzzle master.. Rubik's cube... clown... Robot... and so many more... |

Here's a great version with a clever kicker, by Doug Henning.

That is, to this day, my FAVORITE Doug Henning illusion performance of all time!
Interestingly, I say him perform Mismade three times live and at least twice on television (including the Muppet Show performance), and his illusion had a slightly different paint job every time.
