Huh. Ketchup bottle pseudo vanishes? Right at the top of the show? I don't know if showing a lack of skill ("I'm trying to fool you with this vanishing bottle, I really am...") - before you've shown them any real skill - is such a good idea... Unless you're working for some very seriously patient crowds.

Jump out there, let 'em know that you CAN do something, get used to each others' personalities, have fun, blow 'em away... And then later, only AFTER you've established that you know what you're talking about, do a "trick gone wrong" or "really bad bottle vanish". It'll probably have more impact later, and you won't run the risk of losing the crowd only 10 seconds into your act.

Same with the bandanna... It's a funny routine, yes, but I think it may be a bit too slow of a start to open a show with. Plus, those first few minutes are VERY important for developing a rapport with the people, and I'm not sure somebody else's recorded voice is really the best way to do that.

Just my opinion and my experience. But I'm a pretty young guy, so I could be totally wrong.

Agree with above comments..Bandanna is not an opener, way to slow

First few minutes on stage are crucial,. I work & perform the corporate market only and you have only a small time frame to win over the audience..you may look at a quick music backing effect to open then build comedy with your rapport on the mic once you have done this.
I open some shows with a 60 sec music backing & do 2 effects that are very funny and work well through trial & error over hundreds of shows then have a good opening set I talk to the audience with more comedy then go intpo a longer routine...

From what I've read and have seen:

You are supposed to talk to the audience and get them to like you.

I talk and tell three jokes at the beginning of my show.

Neznarf,
after reading your last Post,
it struck me:
wouldn't THAT be a funny opener(!).

"From what I've read and have seen:

...then stand there.
....a nice loooong pregnant pause.

"Now that things are warmed up...."

It's probably just ME,..
but,
the thought of it all,..
cracked me up!

I love to open with a quick talk to get acquainted then right into fire wallet routine that blends to a money trick. They sit up and pay attention and it's great for a laugh. I think it is important to get your audience a little excited at the beginning, and wondering what your going to do next.
