I have a photo I would like to use as an avatar, however, try as I might to adjust size and image quality in photoshop I cant seem to get it below 20.4kb. I don't really know how to make the best use of photoshop, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, and I'd just use another photo, but all of my promo photo's seem to be too good a quality, or something.

Thanks!

I used preview on Mac to do it, think it was adjust size then I could choose a target size, or just kept reducing the height until it fit.

May be of no use to you if ur on a PC. Paint may be the best option, as strange as it seems if you have photoshop to use paint, but it might get the job done!

I have photoshop 7 and if you click IMAGE, then click IMAGE SIZE you will be able to adjust the picture to any size that you want. Of course you will loose resolution, but your magic Café avatar will not be part of your promo package.

Here's a program that a lot of Café members have used and it's simple. Just browse to the photo you want to use, change the pixels from 200 to 100 and click resize. That's all there is to it. The save the result on your computer and upload to the Café.

My avatar, neznarf and Al Straker's all came from this program

If you want a stand-alone program for a Windows computer to deal with your photos, you might look into IrfanView. It's free. http://www.irfanview.com

Thanks for the suggestions guys, Shrinkpictures did the trick. I still find it strange that after I shrunk the pic to 50 x 50 pixels in Photoshop and saved it at the lowest quality, the file size was still 20.4 KB. Maybe Photoshop adds some extra baggage? Oh well, doesn't really matter now.

JPG files have a TON of extra data embedded, including date of original photo, camera type, settings, and so forth. To clear that garbage out, I use a picture program (My favorite is IrfanView) to save it as a bitmap (BMP) then save the BMP back to JPG. There may be an easier way, but it works with what I have and often reduces the file size by 50% or more. Since JPG is a compression utility, be sure to set quality to 100%.
