Antonio Restivo has just wrapped. Dan Sperry is coming up. Comments and thoughts?
So far they love Antonio. "More Fire, More Girls and Great Style" are their comments. "What is it like at your house when you BBQ?" |

==================SPOILER ALERT ====================== PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS UNTIL THE SHOW AIRS IN YOUR AREA ================================================== Dan has just performed - Our friend Rudy Coby helped him prepare for this as will be evident when you see it. One Buzz from Piers who says "It was one of the most pathetic tricks that I have ever seen." Dan defended himself saying that it is more about letting go. Just pretend. Sharon loved the "Robot Lady" Howie loved the character and wants more! What do you think? |

I thought it just wasn't a very good trick at all. For the setup he was blocking the audience and home viewers way too long.
Also as Pier's mentioned, the arm looked HORRIBLY phony, like a piece of wood that didn't seem to match Nick's skin color at all.. You have 2 minutes to perform before MILLIONS of people. For most this is the opportunity of a lifetime. It's has to be perfect and over the top amazing. Sharon was right when she mentioned the Walking Robot Lady. It is a very good illusion. I guess she forgot she already saw this when Kevin James was on. |

Not to argue, but to clarify... Kevin James does one thing. This was totally different. It was Rudy Coby's effect which is indeed a bit different.

Antonio brought it,sadly dans felt flat, that arm looked horrible, ugh so disappointed, I really wanted him to kill it. The show as pretty weak overall. I see prince poppycock and antonio advancing, not sure how many slots there are, but even if there are 4 I think a couple singers will fill them, RATS!

Oh, man! I love Dan Sperry but it was tough today. I saw that trick on Dan's website and it has gone through a whole lot of updates and is a lot cleaner now. I wonder if the fact that this was supposed to be family entertainment stopped Dan from making the arm a bit more realistic (using blood and stuff). Also I wonder how many times he's done it with a guy with skin as dark as Chris's?
I felt like when he talked about the suspension of disbelief he was referring to the fact that the real arm was signed after the trick, that's the bit that makes you doubt what you saw in the first place. The robot lady is a classic principal yes but it was used in a very unique way. I really like that. Really though how many of us has ever had the chance to perform a totally original effect, including presentation and method on live TV in front of thousands of people. I would wager that none of us have so I will be really disappointed if I read any stiff criticism on the board concerning any of these guys. |

I originally built that saw for the show I was in with Paul Kozak on the comedy club circuit about 16 years ago. You can see the edge of the framework behing Kozak's head in my avatar. Dan didn't have much time to prepare for it. THe producers bumped him up a couple of weeks on very short notice.
Dan Sperry is tops in my book and I appreciate him liking the saw and be willing to try it on national television. All I saw was the Youtube version so don't know how the show went over all. THeres a couple of pictures of it in my book, Tabman Magic. We love you here at El Tab world Dan. Thanks for everything.

I saw Dan do this act last night at the Magic Castle and hoped that the TV lighting was going to help as everyone agreed last night it was the worst looking arm, the color was so not even close. Unfortunately it didn't. When the judges say the best part of your act is really someone elses' hmmm.
But that being said - he was on Tv and got huge exposure. |

Ya, I think Dan is very talented and has lots of skill for sure, but Piers hit the nail on the head, and in my opinion Dan shouldnt have answered the way he did either, because he pretty much just said he is right. Im not sure what the right answer would be but Its equivalent to someone doing the old thumb off hand trick and someone saying it was "pathetic" and me saying 'Just let go'. And Its not Disney, you're supposed to fool people and MAKE them believe, not hope that they suspend the skepticism and just go along with it.
I will say it again, Dan is a great performer and definitely has a lot of great pieces, but this was weak and will not compete with Restivo, Grasso or Murray; he had to bring WAY more than that. It reminds me of Kevin James a few years back with the mediocre effect he did. Truth is both the Judges and laypeople want to see big and bigger stuff, either that or something outrageous. I would have even considered doing the dove act, even though the judges have seen it before, that dove act is like no other for sure! |

Gotta agree with PokerMagic. Piers is one of those guys who wants to figure out the trick and loves to expose it.

The point of magic is making them realize that figuring it out is not the point, but rather, that it is an experience of fantasy. In this way, it is like Disney. You know you are going to be ok at the end of a roller coaster, but that doesn't stop it from being scary. Same thing with magic, you know its fake but that doesn't stop you from feeling wonder and amazement. That being said, if someone knew it was "real" than it would not be as amazing... if magic was real, it wouldn't be magic- it would be science. |

We can't just place clearly fake things on screen and then say ooooo pretend, that's our job.
the line of the arm was all wrong, ghosts in disney are different. If we are going to just pretend then just tell people you did something amazing. While posting this I magically flew into all of your houses and slapped you then flew back to my house really fast. (i didn't but if we pretend then I can win AGT) great for getting that far etc. but if I had the same opportunity I would like to try something different. Piers was right, I would not want to pay to see that act, sorry. Don't think he wants to expose the tricks, and I don't think he has to... Thanks for sharing somewhere to watch the videos too.

This effect wasn't bad, but you're right, it didn't show up well in that lighting. I wonder if overly faking it would have been the better approach?
Squirt gallons of blood from the saw, have the arm dripping and mostly covered, have the MC screaming, etc... |
