Dan Sperry should have did a Richardi on the panel. That would have got them excited and Howie to really freek out.
He should have said nothing to the producers and then had blood shooting out all over the place. Then maybe the judgers would have got excited. |

Love me some Dan Sperry and hope to see the next version of Tabman's arm saw after he has had time to properly pull it together.

90 seconds was just not enough time to properly perform this effect. Over a minute was prep then it appeared Dan totally had to rush to get the effect finished. That is really what killed the illusion in my opinion. He couldn't give it the presentation it required.

I just got off the phone with Dan, there was a lot of things that were just out of his control. Time was a huge factor and the whole thing was rushed. He gave it his best shot .. and that's all you can do.
He still got more face time on national TV than any of us ... Steve |

The non-magicians that talked with me about the show were 100% for Antonio and .001% for Dan. They thought Dan was "up to something" when he hid the arm for so long ..
Just their comments.

To me this just looks like a cut down version of Tony Spina cutting a girl in half with an electric saw blade. I was not that impressed years ago with that version and this version left me kind of flat as well.
Let's fact it they only want Copperfield and Sigfred and Roy kind of huge illusions that fill the stage. A singer or Ventriloquists can be in one on the stage but for magicians they only want million dollar acts. Being Pierce is going to replace Larry King on his talk show, maybe he will no longer be a judge. We can only hope the next judge is better. |

I just saw Dans arm saw act on AGT and it was so bad, it made me cringe... It's all in the setup were it wen't wrong for me.
Why does it have to be a volunteer, and why does it have to be someone who has a reputation for bad acting/presenting. Why do we have to see the smirk on the volunteers face when he gets blindfolded. Why does he get blindfolded - when on this very closeup vibey feel performance (hands on, gritty, ...), he represents the audience - and therefore it is like telling them up front "don't look too close". And then the reveal as he is straped in... The angles of the shoulder and the hand are abnominaly wrong, he has to lean into the table to maintain his position, he is moving, while the middle part clearly is not. The upper part of the prop is bouncing out of position under the movement - and Dan is reaching up to the saw - while everyone already knows what is about to come. Saw, saw and then the already anounced autograph part. There is no element of surprise. The setup in not genuine (when someone asks me for my autograph I pull out...), there was no time for the audience to ease into Dan's character ("Magic Moments") - which he pulled off so brilliantly in his first AGT presentation, just to shock them again (it was brilliant "push-pull"). I feel with his stage character we need to see the human side in him to open up, and therfore get shocked again - but in a good way. It is the opening up of the polo mint and the "I've got something in my teeth" or the "is it good so - no?" body language in his dove act, when he "awakes" the dove after turning it off - that made those acts work. Pure shock value simply isn't enough - especially if the effect comes off as try hard. *pop goes the pyro in the end* Don't get me wrong, I love Dans act and especially his stage personae, he is a very talented magican - and has not to rely on stage props to be entertaining. |

I do not see ANY defense for Sperry to rush this illusion. He gets what he deserves on this one... not to go through. SO he was not allowed BLOOD? With ALL THAT BUILD UP in the pre performance chat, I was expecting gore. He had built it up to show us something to push our buttons and then did a cheesy sawing illusion and poorly at that.
I counted over 22 seconds is back is turned to the audience. Unless you tell me he was compensating for something that went wrong with the illusion, the reason it failed to impress is that 20 seconds even is too fishy to be convincing. It took 5 seconds to reverse the action. If he could get the name on and prep the arm in that time he would have had a shot, even if the arm was no better than you saw. Yeah, I know it is not meant to be seen as close as the TV but come on people you are on TV and KNOW IT. There is no excuse here that will make any sense to why someone would even WING such a thing. Giving it your best shot when you promise something you are not ready to deliver is NOT a good excuse nor is it respectable. Nor was his comments. Look he tried to cover for a bad performance but since his illusion was not even passable as an...illusion, there was no belief to suspend. When you go to Disney you can not figure out how the ghosts appear before you so his analogy could not work since you saw what he was doing even if you did not see it. You really can not defend his 20 plus second struggle. Hello! This show has been on HOW LONG? don't compete if you do not have at LEAST 5 show stopper acts. I do not think it is admirable to enter the competition BLIND. These magicians who compete all do something similar to most of the same judges that have seen the illusions before. It always amazes me when a similar illusion like the robot girl gets praise when James did his version in prior years witnessed by two of the 3 judges. Sorry Dan, I like your spirit and I guess you learn from your mistakes. Stick with what you have performed 100 plus times and even if it is small, you will still come across better than you did. You should have modified the box you used before the saw. You still would have complied with having a SAW and it looked better than what you did on AGT. But you know that.... |

It's easy to be hypercritical but I'm sure DS will take them all to heart and I hope to see the critics on stage soon showing us their "stuff."

Im listening to the iTricks podcast right now, and its clear, that the volunteer wasn't up to par with the execution of the illusion. Note taken. Back to my homechair critics chair.

Interesting but the arm saw's origins pre-date Tony Spina. Floyd Thayer built two of them. I streamlined the look when I built this one in the early 1990s. Dan used it on AGT but without some of the extras like the drawer which was part of Thayer's original design.
