My uncle used to live with us in Indonesia. As Chinese descendants, life was rough as there were discrimination towards the Chinese. That's why some of my uncles and aunties gave up the citizenship and converted into Taiwanese. That was about 20 years ago.

I haven't met my youngest uncle (from my dad's side) for about 17 years. He had been suffering from heart cancer for the last two years. He told nobody until it was too late. So last April my mum told me about his condition. Doctor said he had less than a year. Two years, if everything is normal. Having this funny feeling, I asked mum if she can cover some of the fee to go to Taiwan. Long story short, I visited him last May with my bro.

He was so happy as we used to live at the same street and I grew up knowing him with my other uncles and aunties. Too bad I could only visited him for 5 days as I got work to do.

On Tuesday morning, I got a phone call from mum. She told me that he just passed away that morning around 10 a.m. on August 24th. My heart broke as I still want to visit him again. He even told me that if the chemo works fine, he wanted to visit me here again in Indonesia. But life is full of mystery. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to him while he was at the hospital. But my wife told me that at least I did visit him and he was wonderfully happy just to see me.

We just spent hours talking at my aunty's house. We didn't go anywhere with him as his condition made him pretty weak. I somehow regret that I only spent 5 days in Taiwan. I should have spent more, maybe like a week or so.

He was divorced so he had to live with my second aunty. He is my youngest uncle. My dad has 11 brothers and sisters, now I'm down with one uncle left who is also suffering from paralysis. Times like this sometimes hit you hard. I want to pay my last tribute to him but mum can't afford for any more air ticket to Taiwan. He will be cremated in September 2nd. I've made myself a promise that soon I could earn enough money to go to Taiwan, I will visit his place without any question.

He might be nobody to the world, but he is my uncle. I just want to pay my last tribute here. His Facebook account will most probably be given to one of his best friends or one of my cousins. I'm happy for him as his illness had given him a lot of suffering. He was not allowed to eat anything with oil or salt. He is at peace now and no longer suffering. Just want to tell him that he'll be missed by us.

RIP Zhang Yie Kie, Feb 11th 1961 - August 24th 2010. So long, uncle. We all love you and miss you.
