27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287

Good heavens, no! Will appear unusually bright, perhaps, but still only as a point of light.

This one comes up every few years. Mars will always look like one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It will never be more than that.

OTOH if it's clear where you are tonight the moon is very nearly full and Jupiter is very bright. Look for the second brightest thing in the early evening sky; it's Jupiter.

Do you have a pair of binoculars? If your hands are steady, you should be able to see up to 4 of Jupiter's moons.

That is a good question....someone stole my binocs!

If you could see the dark sky here you would be shocked. It is almost as dark as at sea if no moon, if a full moon I can walk in the desert at night and see fine.

I'm not surprised. The American SW desert has some of the best skies on the continent. I'd love to spend some time down there one day.

Correct!

Both the 3/4 Moon and Mars seem exceptionally bright toniite, however Mars due to the distance from Earth appears tiny compared to the Moon.
What a beautiful evening though.

Darn, thanks John for ruining it. I figured someone would, that's why I put it up here. No tom, it didn't seem false, to me or several others here. None of us have achieved your level of coolness.

Plus, the link listed above says it did happen in 03', so my idiocy is only off by 7 years.

Wrong again. Read it more carefully and follow the link that describes what did happen in 2003. http://tinyurl.com/2fgcqt2

There are those who actually believe that Mars can appear as large as the moon? That just amazes me.

And I'll bet you voted for bush....

I don't think it says mars will look the same size, just that it will appear as though there is another moon.

That would still be wrong. It would just look like a bright star.
