Hey, Shop-heads, today I was driving from Nashville back to the Swamp (I was in Nashville working Waylon Jennings Appreciation Days) and decided to pass through Birmingham and catch Michael Baker at his digs before he moves the whole shooting match to a new location.
So I called Michael when I was a half hour out, and he put some coffee on and met me at the door. He is a super nice host and put up with my visit and posed for a few pictures in front of some of the beautiful oriental themed props he makes in his shop. Here's a couple of pictures you might enjoy. Thanks for the coffee and the visit, Michael. It was great seeing you again. Michael plans to be at Bob Sander's Magicians Flea Market on September 11 on Clanton, Alabama. For more information on this event, visit the website at: http://magicvalleymagic.com Thanks again, Michael.

Thanks for giving me a place to take a break. I was shaking when I got to your place. I shot pictures for 16 hours the day before in the sun and only got 5 hours sleep. I think I told you I got some magic in with Houdini's Spirit Lights. They're fantastic in the dim lights around the edges of the stage.
I'm feeling my age today. Headed out to the shop in a minute. I enjoyed seeing your setup, but I hope you can have more room in the next shop. I'll try to come see you once you get settled in, but you'll have to let me park my bus in your yard! Quote:

There are 35 steps from the street straight up to my front door. First thing Tabby said when he got here and looked up at me was, "Do you have to do this every time?" "Yup." We used to kid folks about having an oxygen tank waiting for them at the top, but if I was going to be staying here, that would become a reality (or a necessity). Quote:

You know, I remembered you telling me about the Peach, and I looked for it, but I never saw it. I might have missed it, though. I was so tired I was hallucinating and thought I saw a giant chicken wearing a pair of striped pants standing in the middle of the road. Maybe it was the giant peach???

The big peach in Clanton looks a lot like that. It's one exit north of Bob's exit and on the right if you're heading south. It can be a bit obscured by trees certain times of the year until you are right there close to it, so it would be easy to miss it.

Always so nice to see Michael Baker's wonderful paint work. Got a rare chance last month to see Joe Stevens collection, he had several Baker pieces. You know if something is going to make it in that collection it's got to be the best.....sure wish I could paint like that.
Michael, Now that your shop has it's own thread will you be posting pic's of any wacky inventions like homemade paint shakers and such? Gimpy

Michael, Right now, I am in the process of packing for a move to Illinois in a month. Tabby saw much of that the other day. Once I get relocated, I'll be happy to post whatever I can. It will be good to take the photos before I have a chance to completely trash the shop. Ha-ha!! Tabby and I were laughing about that (my work bench). He said, "That's the most amazing thing I've ever seen." I think he was being kind.. like when, "If you can't say anything good..." Ha-ha!! Then he said, "You just need more work benches." (Ain't that the truth...) I begged him not to take any photos of the bench. It looks like a cross between an episode of "Hoarders", and the movie, "Twister".

Too bad I didn't take a picture of the workbench. Michael distracted me with his beautiful paint work and stencil art.

I just saw this photo, and thought it would be an interesting starting point for an illusion. I've seen a couple similar ideas using this idea with feet to get a levi effect. The head vanish is kind of cool. Different than the standard headless sideshow illusion.

Looks like someone snapped a pic of a guy moving a mirror,I wonder if the guy even knew he was doing this. Might have something like magic if the arm was farther from the mirror. Could be done with a handle on the back.....Now what to do with the edges that makes sense....?

Yeah, when it's low to the ground, you can use the sidewalk, etc. get a good reflection, and a box on the ground is a more natural thing. I just saw the photo and thought it offered other possibilities than the standard 45 degree principle. You'd really have to control the viewing angle.

I think about finishing it every time I have to stand and shake a can of paint for a couple of minutes. I may have to take a day and get it working. Lots of cheap motors on Ebay.

Michael did bring us at Magic Valley Ranch some treasures from his workshop. As usual, they were to die for.
