I've just been reading Richard Kaufman's comments about this in the latest issue of Genii. Strangely I remember Max Maven doing exactly the same effect at a UK Convention at least 25 years ago. Would be interesting to see if Max is mentioned in the instructions for this, or is it a case of independent invention ??

Great effect- easy to perform- major wow factor. Easily one of the best things I have bought this year.
I would love to see some others post new video showing their handling and presentations. BRETT

This is my first post... and there's no better effect that I have or know of to post about at this time... and I've been scouring the world wide web for the best crafted close-up gimmicks-
This is by far the best quality gimmick, and gimmicked deck for that matter, that I've purchased in 15 years. It's so good that I want more from the mind of Mr. Borer! All I can say is that this deck makes you seem like a wizard and no sleight of hand is required! |

GET SHARKY is a lovely effect and wonderful craftsmanship as others have said.
Best effect of 2010 on the Café, and well deserved.

I cannot recommend this absoloughtly brilliantly made deck highly enough
Over the years like all of you I have purchased some absolute rubbish some average and some very good magic This deck is a joy to use I had like most knowledgable magicians worked out how this must work but thought because of the price had to be very well made. I assure you it is and oh so easy to perform and it floors people completely as you give them the deck to look for their card even my magic friends did not find the secret and they looked closser than a layman ever would. Well done Christophe and thankyou for giveing me a miracle |

I was at the Magic Apple in Studio City CA for the first time this past Sunday.
I was visiting LA with my daughter and happily surprised that they carried GET SHARKY along with all the Phoenix decks - but the person working there Sunday was totally unfamiliar with it so I figured "what the heck" and opened up a new one and showed it off. I did the traditional "one armed" version of Get Sharky for some customers. I think one of them bought it minutes later and the clerk seemed grudgingly appreciative. AS an aside, I wasn't very blown away by the service person there at the Magic Apple - Yes, the store was fantastic and loaded with selections - but the person minding the store Sunday (not the owner Brent) seemed less than enthusiastic - which was a little disappointing as I always try to shop & brick and mortar stores when visiting a town as I know many others here do as well. Anyway, Sharky is still unknown to many magicians and lay people... it hard hitting and something that I use often.

I agree with you in that it would be nice to be assured that proper credits are being given. I have not heard anything to confirm that. The two mis-attributions in this thread do not give me hope.

Do any UK dealers carry this? I haven't had any luck finding one out here. I'd love to use it for a gig I have coming up but it's rather short notice.

On 2011-03-31 10:27, rocknrollerj wrote: There seems to be confusion as to the history of ideas, so in the interest of preserving the historical record and making sure credit is given where it is due: The idea of a card disappearing from a pack held by one hand goes back, as far as we have found, to ken krenzel in epilogue. Max's version, called pocket nightmare, was being used in performance as early as the late 70s. He added the idea that the pack never leave the audiences sight, and other salient presentational conceits such as "I didn't say which hand". While max's effect appears different from krenzel's in performance, borer's appears identical to max's in performance. Max performed this effect, most notably, at fism in Madrid prior to borer's duplication of the effect in his lecture notes - published later. Another magician named Santos published a handling of max's effect in magie. Max responded via letter to the editor laying claim on the effect. The method goes back to forcing decks devised by Ford Rogers and Franklin Taylor. These methods date back to the 1920's and some great ideas with the taylor pack, including causing a card to vanish there from, can be found in the pheonix magazine. John mendoza aka runawayjag mentioned that the method was a modified Taylor peek deck in his review of the item found in the review section. (linked to earlier in the thread). Just a little history, to the best of our knowledge, for those interested in making sure credit goes to those whose innovations have allowed our art to grow. This information has been communicated to the producers of get sharky. I am unaware if they have acknowledged that proper credit should go to max, Rogers, Taylor et al. |
