Without a doubt, PRIMUS.

I would say Primus is experimental or progressive as the less hip say.
Lobo, I was shocked by Johns vicious attack on your lists. |

I surrender....as I said before, clearly keyboards means progressive. Dread listed a lot of albums I just considered rock music. They were certainly leading music into new directions, and thus guys like Devo and The Cars should be included.

I hadn't head the term "Progressive Rock" until a year ago, actually, and was suprised to learn I grew up with it. It seems most "classic" rock is also "progressive" rock.
Prog rock/metal is characterized by a classical influence, and uses intricate harmonies and repeating themes (like classical music.) Iron Maiden, especially the later stuff, is prog metal. I think most of Dio's work qualifies too. Queensryche, definately. I was asking around on another forum for modern bands in a similar vein, and was told about "Hammers of Misfortune". The group's got a few members of GWAR (another band I've not listened to much), and sounds pretty good. They've also got a female vocalist- unusual for metal bands. Check 'em out on iTunes if you like prog metal and have a chance. http://www.hammersofmisfortune.com/news/ Oh, apparently they've signed with a record label, which will be re-releasing some of their older albums. Should be interesting. (Note to Santa- HoM's another Bay Area band.)

Some other new catagories of music are "heritage", "jam band", and "adult alternitive". My opinion of "progressive rock" is rock music that is not "regressive". I will not name any regressive music, because I don't want to get into an argument, but there's lots of it out there.

I'm guessing Big Pink.

That's an easy question because a picture of the house was on the Band's first album. Sonia Dada is a great little known Chicago group, and I loveem. I fear that they are no longer together, but here is a little ditty that they sang. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9WH8AfakFs

as a certified pink floyd fan, I'd have to say Dark Side was not progressive, compared to their other works. I would say ummagumma or relics are more progressive. parliament funk

Surprised no one has mentioned-
Dream Theatre: Images and Words Smashing Pumpkins: Mellons and stuff with the long stuff and such. (Not actual title) I hate to say it but Tool's early stuff. I have to admit, prog ain't my favorite genre so I don't know a ton about it.

I had a complete collection of moody blues records, but I sold my records, and now I have just my iTunes file, and my ipod as my music collection. There are no boody blues on my ipod because I tried to put only the music that I will listen to on it, and I have no desire to listen to music just because it is nestalgic. You can judge what is a keeper, and what is just another old song for youself, but I don't want my ipod to gather any dust. IMHO

I should have specified Images and Words. I vividly remember the first time I heard "Pull Me Under" Holy crap! They also do the most amazing covers.

They do at that. I played a Petrucci Music Man once, sweet guitar. Best. Action. Ever. Have a couple of his books too. He's been an influence. He's my uncle's favorite guitarist, and my uncle is one of my favorite guitarists, so it's trickle down musicology.
