Hey guys,
Just got a newsletter thing through from RSVP magic. Saw this product which I think is just an awesome awesome idea. So many times at a gig I've been asked how I got into magic, Where I learnt it? and can I teach them/ Can they learn magic themselves. This is just an awesome way to give away the ultimate gift of magic. The fact you can then sell it and it looks as cool as it is, just awesome. Tis on top of my list of magic to buy! Super idea whose time has come! No doubt, those residual sales after your performance can and will add big bucks to your income.
The price is a steal considering you can quickly make that back so I can see why they priced it so high.

I have been using Paul Rohmany's personalized dvd for years and have sold well over 1000 of them. It was so profitable that I went out and bought a fancy replicator so I could do them myself. The first batch I sold paid for the cost of the dvd and the replicator and it's been 99% profit ever since. So I can attest to these dvds as an unbelievable money maker.
I currently sell two different dvds and would be interested in a third but I want to make sure the tricks are different than the once I currently offer. Is there a list of the effects taught on this rsvp dvd? |

Hello Everyone,
Many thanks for the interest in this product which we've just released today. It's an updated version of one that we produced about five years ago which only featured half the tricks. I think the thing that makes this cool and unique is that your name and contact details are actually on the footage itself, plus you get a DVD cover (with your name featured on the front) and a windows media video of the trailer for your website. Eric is right about potential sales of this DVD as we've had orders already today from people that had the original and want to upgrade to the new version. They all tell me how successful it's been for them both as a promotional tool and sales item. Eric (emyers99) has already emailed me privately about the list of effects which are listed on the trailer, but for those that are interested they are: Contents Include: THE CUPS AND BALLS FIND THE LADY THE VANISHING COIN MYSTERY READING YOUR MIND THE JUMPING RUBBER BAND THE INCREDIBLE MATCHBOX AND CARD TRICK JUMPING JACKS WATER TO ICE THE MINDREADING PLAYING CARDS SPELLING THE CARDS THE FOUR ACE MYSTERY THE ACROBATIC MATCHBOX Any questions please feel free to ask! Best, Russ |

Who is featured on the DVD teaching the effects?

Hello daffydoug,
It's a generic DVD, so it features just a pair of white gloved hands, so that it can be the magician whose name is on the DVD! Best, Russ |

Hi Russ,
I am a big fan of your site and all your DVD's...well I have most of them !!. I think this is a brilliant idea but before I purchase the master dvd, could you please recommend the best software for copying the master dvd, and the best DVD-R discs to use?. I have copied discs in the past and not all of them played on every DVD player. My problem would be selling them off, only to find they do not play or jump on the customers DVD. Best, John. |

I (thankfully, knock wood) have never run into that problem. I just use standard DVD-R disks. I do think a quality replicator helps with quality control however. You can either use a service like discmakers.com or buy a quality replicator like I did. It burns multiple disks at once. It's been years now but I think I paid around $350 or $400 for mine and, selling the dvd's for $10 or $15 each, it paid for itself immediately.

Call me a prude but I've never been a fan of offering a "How To", "You Can Be a Magician Too" materials as a sales tool for profit after my show. In MY opinion it cheapens the art. It makes what I just did to amaze my crowd down to "For a few bucks you can do this too". Ya, I know many do it like Lance Burton and Mac King BUT I think it cheapens the art offered in this way. You may sell allot and make extra money, but to me it isn't worth it. My opinion!

Hello magicmonty,
I work on a Mac and the easiest software to use is 'toast titanium 10' which I believe also works with PC's. It's not cheap, but it's very reliable and stable. You can find out more here: http://www.roxio.co.uk/eng/products/toas......odqx_O2A I remember when I used PC's (back in the dark days!), that I used 'Nero': http://www.nero.com/eng/slp-nbr.html?Ner......_id=7248 I find that the best DVDR's to use are Verbatim 16x. I use them all the time for masters and have yet to have a problem with a bad disc. In answer to your question regarding playback on DVD, there are a very small amount of DVD players that will not play DVDRs, but the percentage is extremely small. They will of course play on all Mac's and PC's. Our master copies are created to play in all countries, including Europe and the USA. A lot of people think this is to do with region settings, but this is not completely the case and there is more to it. I hope this helps. Best, Russ |

I respect your opinion. I view it differently. I'm a corporate lawyer and do 50-70 shows a year. So money is not the reason I sell them. Promotion is the reason I sell them. The money just happens to be a nice, albeit unintentional, bonus. I mostly perform for corporations and resorts and therefore mostly for adults. If you give them a business card, most will be forgotten. But if you give (which I do a lot) or sell them an instructional dvd for their kids...kids who will play it 50 times a day thereby burning your name and picture into their minds...you have gone a long way towards conquering the most difficult marketing barrier - forcing people to remember you.
From experience I can tell you that most people will never perform a single trick off these dvds because those people quickly realize that even "simple" magic is hard to master but even harder to present. Accordingly, the respect they have for your ability will be heightened. Those that do perform some of the tricks will have an even greater respect for you because they clearly love magic, appreciate your ability and are even more impressed that you are willing to teach them. As with everything magic, it all comes down to your ability to present. Let's face it, if you put on a crappy show, people aren't going to buy your dvd. If you blow them away, clearly demonstrating that after 25 years of practice (in my case anyway) you can perform seeming miracles that they could never hope to duplicate, they will respect you enough to want to buy your dvd in hopes of being able to do even a small piece of what you can do. Plus, the dvd is a way to make us more "human" and approachable to an audience. I really don't see how this, in any way, cheapens the art. Let's face it. None of use would be here (and the Café wouldn't even exist) if we hadn't purchased a Houdini magic set from the toy store at some point in our childhood. Just my two cents. ps. These make great giveaways when I perform at children's hospital. They are a great way to take the kids' minds off of reality for at least a few hours. |

Do you remember when Joshua Jay was promoting his new book at the time and he was performing on a morning show with Kathy Lee and some other lady? He performed "Splash Bottle" (poorly) and a card effect. Anyway because he was promoting his "how to" book the whole focus from the hosts changed from wonder to "method". Not from enjoying the illusion but to "Oh I think I saw you do something there" was a comment from Kathy Lee. I feel if you are doing a good show, selling "How to do it" dvd's cheapens you as a performer and trains your audience to focus on methodology. Sure what we do is not easy and as you know takes years to perfect. BUT once the spectator is satisfied by viewing the method they could care less how long it takes to perfect and the art of magic loses. Again my opinion.........now back to RSVP's New Making Magic DVD http://www.rsvpmagic.com/making-magic.html

Hi daffydoug,
Yes, that's the point of the whole project. The thing that sets this apart from anything else though is the fact that the magician's name is actually on the footage, as well as the DVD cover artwork, making each order truly unique. Best, Russ |

One more question, and I hope this doesn't sound dumb or redundant, but on the DVD, does the performer actually speak, or is the instruction done by text superimposed on the screen?

Hello daffydoug,
There is no speech used. The routines are all performed to music (copyright free) and there is an amount of text on some of the tricks. Best, Russ |

Thanks! So in effect, the way you did it, those very well could be your hands in the white gloves! (As far as your custonners know)

I remember when I was a kid, and there really were local TV channels, there was this thing that they used to show between cartoons or shows. They called it "Trick and treat with the Magic Hands."
What it was was a black art type thing where all you could see was the white gloved magicians hands. He would demonstrate a VERY simple trick, ("Here is your trick") then they would go to a commercial. Then they would come back after the break and they would say "Now here is your treat", and he would show how to do that ultra simple trick. I'll never forget that, and this reminded me of it.
