Around here (MN), several times a year places have big indoor "vendor fairs". A whole bunch of businesses come, set up a booth, and sell products. Now I was wondering, how would it work to get a booth at one of these things and advertise my magic shows? I could do "demonstrations" and hand out business cards. Just a sudden brainstorm I had. Has anyone done anything like this?

Most of these types of local fairs have a theme. If you fit the theme, why not try it. The booth space is usually pricey, but if you have the money, give it a go.
What most magicians try to do is sell their services to the companies that are there. Meaning they are hired by one of the local companies to help pull people to there booth. This is sort of being a Trade Show magician on a small scale. That way people see you, and you are gettin paid for it. |

Depending on the cost of booth space, barter a show for it, and then add some of your vendors to your space, perhaps at a nominal price. So you actually come out making money.
There are 3 (or more?) levels of networking you can also do there. 1) The producers/stagers of the event....what other events do they do that may be able to use your services. Meet these folks and dig for info. 2) Your fellow exhibitors....a great way to meet fellow business folks, sell your services and find out about theirs. 3) Then, of course, the people who attend. Your direct customer base. Collect names, do a drawing etc. Best of luck, try one and see if it works out! Blair B

I've done this thru chamber of commerce shows. My pitch is going after companies that do trade or consumer shows saying "you stopped for me and I'll bring crowds into your booth like I'm doing now." Paid for itself, I'll do it again next year.

Thanks for the tips, guys. At some of the smaller fairs here the booths might be free.

I never heard of a show promoter giving away booth space, that is how he makes his living. Selling space.

This is quite common for these type of events with marketing, printing and yes, even entertainment. As an event promoter of many types for years, this is one of he most common of practices. Although they try to keep it from other vendors, as then everyone would seek this type of an arrangement. I know of some festivals that the entire days or multi-day lineup of entertainment is secured in this manner. |
