The term "Robot" came from a play "RUR" about an uprising of the "robots" of the title.
"RUR" stood for the company; "Rosman's Universal Robots." When the play was translated, they decided the last word "Robots" would remain untranslated as "Rosman's Universal (Servants/Workers/Slaves)" just didn't have the same kick. Ironically, the "robots" of the play were actually what s-f geeks of today would consider "androids" (artifical life forms) and not "robots" (mechanisms shaped roughtly like a human being) at all. (Oddly enough, the mechanical creatures of "Star Wars" are referred to as "droids."
