I have it and it's a great routine, full of surprises, and not too long. Great job
Bob and Glenn. |

OK - there are lots of "this is great - buy it" comments - and while I would concur I also have a gripe. The routine is shown as if in front of you and from the performers view - all excellent - it means right handed or left handed you are good to go.
BUT when the routine is "taught" it is too fast! Feeling frustrated I actually timed it. The aerial view, from when the caps touch the table to the end is 1m50s which includes a good 15-20 seconds of chit chat about behind the back options. The moves are taught...the routine I feels less like teaching and more like a demo with commentary. One aerial section going at a snail's pace would improve things massively. Still a good DVD. Still buy it, but prepare for unnecessary frustration too (as opposed to the normal frustrations inherent in learning a new skill). Danny |

I can see your point, Danny, but I never felt the frustration you did. I took it in "learn one move at a time" mode and really had fun learning it. I use it busking with Endless Chain and School for Scoundrels Monte, and it makes a full routine. I don't disagree that a slow down could help. I have a DVD player with that option, but didn't need to use it for Boot Camp. All in all, I think it is a great DVD, but it could be improved by your suggestion...

I had the same problem as Danny. I felt the only good angles to learn this was the over the shoulder shot and they
flew though those. There's a player that works on a PC called Uplayer and it will slow video and sound down. Now when I play the over the shoulder section, it's (for me) much easier to work with. |

Thanks for the tip Tom, I'll give it a go. Something I found helpful was writing the moves down....I follow my notes more than the DVD, which is too D**n fast!
I'll give Uplayer a go. Danny |

I had the opportunity to be in a small breakout session when Bob lectured at the Unconventional Magic Convention, in Cumberland Falls, Ky. Bob ran the 5 of us through the drills of this pre-boot camp for close to an hour and a half. Very nice method of teaching by giving us a 1 minute routine that we do 15 times a day. He talked about this DVD coming out soon. I'm glad to see it has been released. I really like Glen's additions to the basic routine, as well.

Glenn is a GREAT teacher and Bob Sheets is a veritable master and I think we all agree on that. As for the DVD, I look at it more as a means for creating one's own routines rather than doing the routine on the DVD - which I DO like. I've pretty much done Norm Houghton's routine after learning it from an old Nick Trost on Gambling Tricks booklet I found when our solar system was still accreting from a disk. Then I came across the Phil Cass routine and added a few bits from it. When I worked through Bob and Glenn's Bootcamp, I realized that I didn't know as much about the Shell Game as I had thought. I will read, watch, listen, to ANYTHING regarding the Shell Game - I absolutely love it because it is part of so many cultures' lexicons. So I have read Chanin's routine - including using three peas for the finale, but, that felt too much like a tiny Cups and Balls routine. Ralph Read's 1938 booklet is a treasure trove of moves, but, the Bootcamp DVD is at least for THE work on the Three Shell Game in terms of bringing together classic moves and having even more pathways to explore.

3 Shell boot Camp is excellent. I purchased it when it came out and also had the opportunity to see Sargent Sheets preform it (an critique my performance) when he lectured in Richmond VA a while back. Take it move by move and it is easy to learn.

This DVD lacks instructions in slow motion, I have quite a difficult time learning from demonstration speed.

Bob and Glenn do an excellent job teaching the routine and it is taught multiple times even with just the bottle cap rings (so you can see everything that is going on). I had to watch it a few times then take it move by move. Don't try to learn the complete routine at one time. It did take me a couple of weeks to put it completely together but once you have it down it is a killer. Thank you Bob and Glenn for putting this out.

I heard these were special in that they do not have grooves on the inside and are flatter on the bottom rim

Hey guys,
Just got hold of the boot camp and have started playing around with it. I'm having trouble with the surface that I practice on (currently just a table top), does anyone have any suggestions for the best type of surface to practice this on? On the DVD it looks like a suede type of material that is being used. I have also got hold of the SforS fast & loose so any suggestions on a mat or table that would be suitable for practicing both 3 shells and F&L greatly appreciated. |

While I'm thinking about it - I've got two different types of pea with the DVD. One type (of which there are 5) is soft and spongy, the other type (of which there are 2) is hard.
Is this just a personal preference thing or is one type more suited for certain steals/loads than the other? |

You use the soft peas for the actual routine. You switch out for the hard peas after the routine. If anyone else tries to play with the shells and pea, it will not work.
