Yes but you'll need one of those Siegfried & Roy cod pieces to keep it under control.

Glad it went well!
I work all the time as a variety act with Burlesque shows. These types of shows are a great place to break in routines and not worry about messing up. The people are always very receptive. And I can't count the number of times I get a bigger applause than the dancers! Plus, you can't beat the backstage area of a burlesque show. Let me know if you want some tips and pointers for these venues. I can give you lots! BTW Harry Anderson also used to work strip clubs. A lot of the material he became famous for was developed in these venues and then toned down for more public appearances. |

I work one of the TOP Strip Clubs on the ast Coast. Im under contract there for the next 2 years , 2 nights a week. I do the main floor a few few hurs , the main VIP Tent , and one feature on the main stage ( usually my bird act with 2 girls) Its a great venue ( lights and the girls are good distractions) I book 50+ gigs a year from people I meet - and the $$ is GREAT

Sorry that I'm late to this thread.
I would work that show. In fact, I have. Two years ago I did a show for a similar group. And I made virtually no changes to my act, other than a few choice situational ad libs, one of which got such a big laugh that it's now part of the script for that particular routine. ("Remember, it's not a skirt, it's a kilt"...you had to be there.) Master Payne, let us know if you do (or did) perform at the group's show this year. And, as an aside, congrats again on a thoroughly smashing presentation at Magic Live. It was good to finally meet you face-to-face. |

Of course I would do it! What a great opportunity to not have to watch your language. Let the what the hell's and dammit'd roll. Even the old standbys the breakaway wand and stiff ropes would lead to "beleive me that has never happened" or "it's not you it's me". My con man character would be at ease. I am currently developing a drunk act but am hesitant ass to when I could perform it. I am hooked up with Coney Island side shows for their Magic at Coney series and would love to do a few of the burlesqe shows. A whole new world!!!!!

It's all a matter of personal choice and what you can handle isn't it??? Me, I've got no qualms doing it. For instance:
How about working for 1000 drunken men in an arena where you go on between the strippers? Or, working a strip club where you take the stage after every 3rd stripper to do a set? Or any of the MANY service club fundraising stags that have upward of 200 to 300 men who have been drinking heavily for 3 to 4 hours before you get up to do your act? And so on.... Been there and done that. These are great paying shows and handled properly are a lot of fun to do with fantastic audience responses! Entertaining with swearing, sarcasm, put downs and dirty stuff work well for audiences that want it. The key is to know what the audience wants. Knowing when to pour it on and when to throttle it back. Knowing exactly "how dirty" the audience wants it when the audience says they want a "dirty show", because dirty is really a relative term. However, if you personally don't feel comfortable doing these types of shows, then don't. I also do plenty of children's and family shows and non-offensive adult shows. Clean or dirty shows without prejudice of either at your service. |

I have as well. Being from Portland (The strip club and porn store capitol of the US), I have actually had some pretty crazy gigs. Payne is not to far away, so he knows how it is in the Northwest.

I worked for over 10 years on English 'Stag Nights'. These men only evenings usually consist of a blue comedian (me!) and a couple of 'Jack the Rippers' (there you go lads - teaching you some cockney rhyming slang). Most of the time, I'd put some magic into the act - it went over well. I've also compered a lot of stags with magic acts doing a 'spot' - including the late Terry Seabrooke, who would bring the house down on these types of shows.
Unfortunately, due to political correctness going absolutely potty, many councils in the UK have banned stripping in football clubs, working-men's clubs, etc. Add to that the smoking ban, and it's a sad state of affairs but stag nights in England have now become more or less non-existent. However, if you get the opportunity of doing any of these types of shows, then my view is that you aren't in any way whatsoever degrading or devaluing magic. Some people really need to wake up and realise that magic is ONLY a form of entertainment. You are simply a showman that uses magic as your desired way of entertaining people. As mentioned in a couple of other posts, the dressing room can be a bit strange at times; especially when you are new to the game. However, it's like anything else - you just get used to it and treat the female artistes with the respect that they deserve. I've honestly sat in dressing rooms over the years (especially on the larger revue shows) literally surrounded by girls sitting there totally starkers when they've come off-stage.....and all I've been worried about is fueling my fire wallet, making sure my T&R newspaper is set correctly, etc. The gorgeous surroundings honestly just all go over your head after a time; and you end up looking upon the strippers simply as your friends - not girls to letch over! My advice would be to always take this work - if only for the experience.

Thought he said he was working in a club in Eugene a while back. May have been temporary. Or I may be remembering wrong.

Another one late to the party, but yes, I would take that show, and I would love it. In no way would that be degrading or devaluing the art of magic. On the contrary, I'd say that trying to keep magic in a tight little box where everyone does the same kinds of engagements is devaluing the art of magic. We've finally (mostly) gotten over our collective top hat and tuxedo fetish, can't we keep that trend going and keep trying to make our art relevant to people who would never otherwise go to a "magic show?"
One of the best performing experiences of my life (though admittedly far from the best-paying) was a little weekly variety show at a local gay bar. I shared the stage with drag queens, burlesque (and boylesque) dancers, comics, and whoever else happened to have a decent act. Most of the audience wanted to see breasts or drag queens, would never have set foot in the door at a magic show--and they loved it. Was also a lot of fun to play to a crowd that had no interest in putting on airs.

I'd have taken that gig in a heartbeat but what else would you expect from an act where the magic words for the adult only audiences were "That's Just Wrong!"? I used to do all of my own leather work for my act and a few others, and one of my designs ended up as safety suspension cuffs for a few, er, bondage professionals. I don't judge. Wow, I just did a Google search and the design is still out there. Thanks for the memories (Pronounce that as you like)!
