I just heard some really sad news for me personally. It's come to my attention that Mr. Mikame, one of the finest crafters in the magic industry, just passed away a few hours ago.
If you don't own a Mikame Craft product, you're really missing out. And if you do, then you will know that we just lost someone who put quality above anything else. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mikame and hanging out with him all day while he was in town. It was a pretty private thing, with only a few other people in the room. Not only did he perform a private show demonstrating all his products, but we got to share lunch and chat with him. What impressed me the most is from the outside, he appeared to be this little, old man......but when he began to perform magic, something changed. His face was vibrant. His humor almost floored me with the way he presented his magic. It drew me in and I wanted to buy EVERYTHING he was showing me! It was a very touching moment for me to share that experience with one of the greats in the industry. My only regret is not getting to know him longer, and I wish him and his family the best during this hard time. Needless to say, there's a good chance that since his passing, all of his items are going to become collectors items, since he is no longer around to manufacture them. I cannot recommend his items enough. RIP Mr. Mikame. Thank you for everything you've done and setting the standard as high as you did.

Wow this is a shock! And as Jeff has said his Effects are so incredibly well handcrafted and worth every penny. His details are impecable... He will be missed, it would be nice to see his legacy carried on by someone within his family.

This is very sad news indeed, I own quite a few of his products and not only are they all of the highest quality, most are just diabolically ingenious.

Is a family member carrying on the family business?
I've been lusting after a few Mikame props for awhile, it would be a shame if they vanished from the market.

That's so sad. He is a great magician. I only own his Mikame MC boxes but it's the only trick I do with coins.
Rest in peace.

Sad news indeed.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Mikame-San,
I have many of your fine products. I will always think of you when I use them. I love the demos of you on the web. Straight to the point and no no nonsense. A giant falls. Rest in Peace, James

No word yet as to whether the family will carry on his legacy. I hope they continue to at least manufacture what he has created throughout the years. He had a magnificent imagination.

This is indeed sad news. I have been collecting Mikame's baeutifully crafted apparatus for many years. I did a limited number of lectures in Japan in the late 90's and was honored to have Mikame-San in attendance. Even better was to have him invite me to his workshop/studio after the lecture. He was extremely kind to me, he showed me so many great things he was working on and presented me with some wonderful gifts. I have continued to collect his products and I am so unhappy when I realize that his life's work will now end. I will miss him,

Very sad news...I can honestly say I have never bought anything with the Miakme name on it that was not of the HIGHEST quality. I hope his family does carry on his tradition. Onward...

I still remember going into our local shop after more than 20 years away from magic, and seeing a Mikame item on the shelf...not knowing who produced it...but recognizing something of quality. I asked the owner what it was, and he said "Oh, that's by Mikame. Expensive, but very nice."
I didn't know what or who Mikame was. At this point in my life, I was finally able to afford more than just plastic cups and balls, so I was curious what "very nice" meant in the world of magic now. I had him show me the piece and I was impressed by the simplicity and elegance of the design. No garish spray painted stencils. No overly ornate trimmings. Just plain, simple, beautiful construction. I handled the piece. I bought the piece. And for the life of me, I can't remember the piece. Why? Because since that day I've purchased dozens of Mikame magic effects. Some are more impressive than others, but all share the same characteristics of a creator who cared. And that, makes us care. RIP Mr. Yonezo Mikame.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Mikame will be really missed by everyone that knew him and even knew of him. In a couple of earlier posts, it said his products were expensive. I really don't intend for this to be argumentative (especially in this time of sorrow), but I thought his products were very reasonably priced compared to products of the same high quality. Just about all of his products that were similar to other tricks or recreations were quite a bit less expensive than the ones I have seen earlier. Like his "Heart Of Gold" was priced at under $100. And in the past, when it was made, it was over $170.00 and didn't even work as well. Also his "Mirror-A-Cle" is much less expensive than Schwartzman's version. it was under $300, while the Schwartzman's version was $550. There are a number of other effects that are well under the price of previously made effects that I could go on about, but won't. Again, this is not about prices, but about Mikame who was a GREAT magician, craftsman and person altogether. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends and also to the magic community.

I bought a beautiful wood Mikame wand from Abbott's during the 2010 Get-Together to use with my Dean's Box, it is gorgeous and fits right in with this great effect. Sorry to hear about Mikame's passing and will sadly read what the magic publications have on his life as I do not know much about Mikame other than through his fine magic products sold worldwide.
