Guys, just thought I'd let everyone know about something I stumbled onto tonight. Most of you will already know about it, but it was new for me tonight. I was working a fair, really just opening for another magician. The location was kind of tough because we didn't have a lot of foot traffic.
Oh, I guess I should start out by letting you know that I perform silently...yep, I don't talk. I've always been pretty good at drawing a crowd, but getting them organized into a nice tight edge, not so much. Man that changed tonight. Anyway, for some reason I decided to stop by Target and pick up a regular coach's whistle. I remember Cellini mentioning that noise is golden. I'd wanted to use a bugle to draw a crowd, but I can't play a bugle! And bugle's aren't as cheap as I'd like them to be. So I thought I'd pick up a whistle for $3 and give it a shot. Man did it work! Not only could I get the attention of the passers by, but once they were pulled in I could position them exactly where I wanted them. It was like I was a cop directing traffic. Plus I stumbled onto some really funny bits along the way. All in all it was definitely worth the $3! So if you are looking for a way to tighten up your edge, give it a shot. I will absolutely have a whistle in my bag from now on! |

Very nice. A lot of good "business" to be had with a whistle as well. You might want to look at a couple of books on clowning.
Also, buy a big bag of whistles from OTC, and give them away to your assistants after helping you with your favorite "do as I do" trick. have fun!

Whistles and horns are both effective because people are trained to look when they hear those particular sounds.

I use fire, but a whistle is certainly safer...
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"
