Side press is another name for the bent press.

I seem to remember about 35 or 40 years ago there was a lifter whose name I can't remember, who had a 220 pound dumbell on display at his gas station. If anyone could bent press the dumbell, they got free gas.

In the bent press though, you lean all the way down to where the off hand can be supported on the floor or leg. There is also more of a twisting motion in the bent press, which is why it is also known as the screw press. A much greater amount of weight can be lifted in the bent press because it is less strict, but it targets the obliques more than the shoulders/triceps. It's hard to explain without seeing it. I will look for a video later.

I forgot about the Inch dumbell. A lot of the modern weightlifters who tried it, couldn't get it off the ground because of the thick handle.

This is a side press:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kny0jxHszX0&feature=related This is a bent press: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Obt54-WU7Q They both use the same muscle groups but as you can see the side press puts more emphasis on the shoulder since you aren't going down as far. You can feel the angle of the stress differently if you try them both. The bent press puts more emphasis on the obliques because of the bending and then the standing back up. I often say bent press when I mean side press but they really are two different exercises. I have to remind myself all the time

I'd think carefully about using these exercises. When you're young, you feel like you're indestructible. Putting your back into vulnerable positions as you begin to get a little older can lead to disaster. I probably won't be able to convince some, but that first disc injury will convince you.
You can take it from someone who's been there or you can find out for yourself. Don't get me wrong, I've been working out for over 50 years and don't plan to stop. Just be careful. |

Oh, I absolutely agree. Proper technique is the key. You must maintain control, balance, and muscle tension throughout. If done correctly, exercises like the bent press and deadlift can protect your back against injury, but if done wrong then they can cause it, and serious injury to boot.
When I mention an exercise I assume that the reader will take all necessary precautions as to their own safety. Basic stuff like knowing your body, consulting a medical professional about any concerns, talking to an expert if you have any questions about technique, and also just developing the "muscle feel" that comes with experience. I deadlift and use the side press because I throw in the Highland Games and I want a strong back and shoulders, but I am very, very, very cautious about my technique.
