The I.T. guy at work surprised me with a 2 red balls he pulled from broken computer mice. 2 different sizes but identicle coloring. I think he's on to something. They're really nice looking, red with the black dots, and solid as heck. May be too slick for some but just wanted to pass it on.

Mouse balls have steel ball bearing inside making them very heavy and attractive to magnets. I thought the same thing for a while, you can actually purchase just the balls at some computer supply parts companies.
For me they are just to hard and heavy. These may be good for the Silent Mora routine though. |

That explains it. Didn't think of steel. The paint job threw me off. It makes sense though, needs to be a perfect sphere to exact specs. Ball bearing is the way to go.

From what you are describing those aren't mouse balls, they are what they call track balls and they do look nice. They look to be about 1 3/4" You move the ball with your thumb to move the mouse cursor. Supposedly reduce repetitive stress problems. I don't think there is metal inside them.

That's it. The color coating is extremely durable too. I dropped one on concrete, it bounced a few times but not even a scratch.

I have found out that all steel is not necessarily drawn to a magnet. I had a stainless steel bird cage, that was not magnetic. The weight of a mouse shows it is a different make up.
I cut open a mouse ball once. It is metal, but what the make up of that metal was is a mystery. |

I wish they made these in different colors for color changes but I've only seen the red. They are nice and even tho they are some sort of plastic they tend to have a cling to them as well.
