I'm not sure if this is revealing too much, but I just got a new ID and there's some sort of chalky powder residue. Is this normal? It's also a bit difficult and noisy to reveal the chosen card.

It may be that your deck has some fanning powder on it. If that's what it is no problem. Just riffle it a bit or wipe it off with a cloth if it's real heavy.

I don't think it's fanning powder since it's on the back of the cards.

I have seen this before with decks that were sprayed a little too heavily, but you really gotta overdo it...I wouldn't say that it's normal.

I seem to recall when I got my very first Invisible deck that it was a bit chalky as well. I still have that deck (Aviator!), and even though it's been 20+ years, the effect is still very much intact, with no residue whatsoever. Perhaps you just need to practice the trick a few times - hopefully if there's not too much excess it will just work itself out.

A bit comforting that other people have had this problem. I thought I had been jipped somehow.

Just an FYI that I just received an order of 2 Card-Shark Invisible decks using the Phoenix designed cards, and the sets are just superlative - beautiful and tight, perfecto all around.
I had a small problem with my original order, and Christian and Roger (at his American operation) made everything right instantly with no questions asked - sending new decks to me. Card-Sharks ID's are highly recommended...They feel just right. I have Card-Sharks "Get Sharky" as well, and the more I use these Phoenix decks the more I love 'em. He even included an extra set of 3 Bicycle design aces if you want to replace the beautiful Phoenix pips. Really classy... Thanks again and big kudos to Card-Shark. BRETT

P.S. My decks were not "Chalky" at all... no dust, no muss, no fuss.

Why would anyone put fanning powder on an ID? Doesn't sound right. I would wipe the powder off every card, and see if it operates normally - if not - get a refund - roughing spray should not leave a powdery residue.

I sprayed already hundreds of decks and partly sourced it out. My external guy sprays several decks at the same time and there we found out a strange thing (that we solved). If two decks where too close together, the second deck that is sprayed can disturb the first one. How? The spray floats out in a kind of fog that hits the cards. The spray also fogs to the side and hardens / dries in the air. If other cards are nearby, this dust falls on the cards. This appears to be dust, and lowers the effect of an ID deck. Fortunately you can wipe this dust off with a normal cotton cloth (or your t-shirt) and get back the necessary roughness.
Please try this out for yourself. Christian

Same thing when you spray cabinet door edges with glue for application of laminate veneer etc.

I have a question:
Do some ID's handle the Kings differently or is their handling consistent since the invention of the ID? If this is too detailed just ignore me! Just curious about this history of this gem.

I just bought a Mandolin ID. Its my first ID so I have no benchmark to compare it to but it seems quite nice.

I bought one of Cardshark's ID's (actually two of them) and it performs like a champ.
Someone here mentioned the idea of keeping your fingers a little moist by grabbing a water glass prior to performing - great idea.
