Julie, Whatever, I'm not the one hijacking threads and being condescending to people I don't even know.
Your lack of an intelligent response other than baby name calling shows what kind of person and practioner you are. 'Juvenile repartee' The only juvenile I see here is the person that came on a thread publicly embarrassed a fellow member with personal information and was condescending to someone that never bothered her. Grow up, this is why you probably are having problems with your customers. Julie - "Wishing you good magic. " Wishing you would magically disappear and find another thread to bug people on. |

Room looks great! I purchased a set of the moving books last year. I wired in a cheap remote control and recovered the spines and ouside covers with real book jackets from old hardcover books. The set resides on the top shelf of my magic library and has "suprised" more than one guest.
Down the road you may want to look at purchasing one of Tim Wiseman's spirit bells (available from Hocus Pocus). Would fit in perfectly with your decor and provide some real time interaction with your guests. John |

Very fun and interesting place to retreat to.
It's about the size of my entire apartment, which (for good or bad) has become a fantasy/bizarre nest. Would LOVE to hear more about the moving books, where's the source? Magically, Walt |

John, thanks that's definitely on my wish list. Walt I got the books on ebay the merchant had a few more to sell. The books are great because they are not overdone with sound, just some creaking noises and they move.
They work off of a sensor or a button so I simply cut the button and connected those wires to longer wires running down the bookcase, under the rug and up the table leg to a small button I bought at radio shack. A little solder and wala books mysteriously move by themselves. Really easy stuff. I have five effects running the same way; An animated Swami in a globe The books A talking Wizards hat with an attitude Thunder and lighting effects And a skull that's jaw moves and eyes light up. Soon as I find a better one that talks I'm going to replace him. His voice chip went and is beyond my abilities to bring back to life. |

Walt, I picked up my "moving books" from one of the "Spirit" halloween stores that pop up every year (and are now open for Halloweeen). As mentioned above I snipped the wires to the sensor and connected to a low power relay. I power the relay from a wireless doorbell unit. The outside books are hollow so there is plenty of room for the extra electronics. I love being able to trigger the books when someone is casually looking at my library.

John can you name some supplier for the relay and the doorbell? I would need specific brands since I'm o.k at soldering but my electronics skills are limited to just about that. I'd love to be able to remotely trigger some stuff. I went with the wiring scheme because I could not find anything like that setup you created.
Thanks |

Actually any wireless doorbell unit will work. You need to cut the wires going to the speaker and attach to the proper posts on the relay. The trick is finding the low power relays. You want one that will trigger at less than 3 volts to work with the doorbell unit. I would try a google search for low power relays. I bought a bunch years ago from a surplus store that is no longer in business.
I also have no background in electronics but am able to fumble around and make things work. There is a nice feeling of satisfaction when you hit the remote and it works! I have found wireless doorbell units to be a great source of cheap reliable remotes. If you want to cause something to light or glow by remote, you can wire an LED to the speaker leads. The LED will stay on as long as the doorbell would normally ring. A number of doorbell units have multiple tone settings so you will have a choice as to how long the light will glow when activated. Off track, but this is also a cheap way to make a light cueing device for a partner mentalism act. John |

I love the idea of a man cave. I actually have a man house (I live alone) and have stuff scattered all around, but the idea of just having a single room with all of my favorite stuff would be great. I have some things out that several people are creeped out by. Well,at least my girlfriend is! Lots of animated skeletons and the like. One of the last things I put in was something I built. I found an old oil painting, cut out the eyes and put moving eyes behind. Earlier in the thread someone said something about a frame that moves on the wall. I never thought about that. I once painted a picture of Houdini and animated him. He is on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2clj2b4XMw When he is not operating, he is ok just to leave up as a picture.
I used to have a larger than lifesize animated clown from the 1940's with moving eyes and a monkey sitting on his shoulder playing a drum. It wasn't meant to be creepy, but he was. He was too big to hide when company came over. Is there video of the moving books anywhere? That sounds like something I would like to have. Thanks! |

Wow Veegates, nice picture. I know this is probably more complicated than a simple explanation but how did you do it? I'd love imply to make the eye's move. I looked into lenticular eyes but all the pics change the subject not simply having the eyes just move.

Hi JM,
Thank you for the link. The books look fun. I am sure I have a place for those! Obeyttheeye, Thank you for the kind words on the Houdini pic. I will find a pic and PM you with a link. It was mostly trial and error. The basic parts are a trapezoid made of 4 pieces of cardboard riveted together. There is a fixed central point and the eyes are allowed to slide back and forth in a folded tube. Now that I wrote this and re-read it... I will look for a picture. I don't even understand what I am saying! |

I added a talking skull in a hanging bird cage that's remotely triggered (very cool), an electric fireplace and a mirror for practice.
Saving up for the wing back chair and then I'm done (financially I mean >;) I'll post pics and a better vid soon. |

Am curious to see the remote skull... sounds cool. On the weekend I hacked the haunted picture frame we have. I removed the cheap picture and frame from the unit. I attached a smaller lightweight black and white 8" x 10" framed picture of my grandfather dressed in a suit and top hat. I cut the wires to the sound sensor and connected them to a magnetic reed switch. I placed the switch behind the eyes in the photo.
Now when someone comes in my magic room I can point out the picture of my grandfather. I tell a stoty that my grandfather had a lucky coin that he always carried with him. Unfortunately he lost before he passed away and was always upset about that. Recently I found Grandpa's lucky coin... here go show it to him. They hold the going up to the eyes and the picture begins to shake and laugh crazily. The coin is the magnetic medallion from Gauci's "Eye to Eye" effect. I think I will get some great reactions with it. Look forward to seeing your new pics. John |
