Ken Webster, without doubt the biggest stage hypnosis earner in the UK in the last decade since McKenna stopped doing his stage shows, has done a very interesting interview here...
http://www.liveinblackpool.co.uk/fl4kdk0......596.html I'll be running a stage hypnosis masterclass with Ken in November in Blackpool, drop me a line for more details. Smiles JonChase |

Hi Jon,
Not involved with the course and since I am not based in the U.K. unable to attend but I have to attest that Ken Webster is probably one of the top Stage Hypnotists currently doing the circuit. Not only does he have very original shows but his own personality and interaction with the public is of such a nature that I wish all performing hypnotists would study. The most annoying question I get is "how do you become a stage hypnotist" the answer, become a comedian, actor and general performer first then learn from the guys who have mastered the art of audience interaction and performance. Trust the course is a good one. Andre

No disrespect to Ken in any way, but the place he performs in is ultra-established (by the man himself of course) and it would be almost impossible these days for him NOT to be successful there.
I wonder what would happen however if he went on the road, called himself Joe and tried making it in Little Britain. I think he'd probably be unsuccessful. This has nothing to do with him, he's great at what he does. It's just that I don't think there's a great market for stage hypnosis in Britain. In fact I know of two of the very top agencies have looked at it and decided exactly the same. But I'd love to be proven wrong. Is there anyone out there who can 'demonstrate' that they're making a reasonable living from it?

We shall soon see since Ken is launching a nationwide tour next year 40+ dates?
Why would he call himself joe? Pretty daft comment. I will be keen to see the outcome. I did a test at Edinburgh Festival and a pre test before. I think part of the problem at least is the recession. The smaller venues are closing down all over the place fewer people are going out drinking. So asking them to pay a door charge...... Most of the smaller venues that used to do things like hypno shows won't do it. I did ty one small venue response wasn't great. I tried Edinburgh Festival in a Major venue who were contemplating putting me on tour. We got 300 in on average each night. Which is in fact very good for the festival but we needed 600 to make any decent money. The real test would right now October but because we never made big money right away they dropped it. So I don't know for sure if there is a market just now. Probably leaning towards no. But wait and see what Ken does that will be a good test. Lets wish him well. It seems that there are two places in the UK where hypnosis is evergreen. Blackpool and Glasgow. Both place have had continuous shows for 20 years. Everywhere else hasn't I have my doubts about a national tour but I hope Ken proves me wrong. |

I also believe if one man can do it so can another whether they are established or not. Ken isn't established throughout the country.
If his tour takes off big then it can only be good for all of us. Who knows it might kick start interest again on a bigger scale. |

Hey Bobser he's almost sold out on 4 venues so far on a UK tour. The others aren't on sale yet. However does that take away the fact that the guy is extremely good at what he does? If so how?

I think you've read my comments totally wrong Jon. I'm not sure how you managed to do that. I did say he was "...great at what he does." That's not good. Not very good. But great!!!
Now I don't think Paul McKenna is great, but I do know the power of a name and believe he'd sell out even more. BUT very few others would. Off hand I can't think of evebn one other. But like I said, I could be wrong (indeed I'd love to be). It's only an opinion. As is yours of course.

My apologies Bob, I didn't so much as misread your post but my reply was a bit knee jerkish as well.
Well there is Derren of course, but I agree. I certainly wouldn't sell out big venues, not after a 10 year lay off, unless I got a 6 show tv stint then it's easy. Sadly it's easy even if the show is rubbish! Kens production and promotion company however have done wonders for others with less following than Ken and he is known by proxy in many towns. Even here in deepest darkest Devon people have heard the name. |
