The idea of using a newspaper instead of a book to get a random word is appealing to me. It just seems more natural to bring out "todays newspaper" (supposedly picked up on the way and definitely an every-day item) than "…I brought along some old books of mine".
Barrie Richardson has what sounds like an amazingly straightforward and clean idea in Theater of the Mind (Word Flight p 244). ...it's just that it seems very risky to me. Trying to be clear and yet cryptic enough to not reveal anything, I must ask: Since the spectators themselves both rip up and decide on a piece, isn't there a big risk that headlines or similar give away the 'reversed' bit? Anyone tried this? Richardson says he has used it successfully many times, and while I don't doubt that, I've still heard people (albeit magicians) say that they have seen "flashes" of things they weren't supposed to see numerous times. Any suggestions for other newspaper "word tests"? Thanks! /Matias |

Oh yes, indeedy. I’ve seen Ian Rowland do T.A. Waters’ ALBERTEST with newspapers. Very neat indeed! Also, Max Maven in his three volume video set works a real beauty with freely selected magazine – though this, too, could be changed for a newspaper.
Also, consider this. Suppose you had a big bundle of newspapers, and somebody selected one at random – no force. Somebody else calls out a page number – no force. The main headline on that page of the selected newspaper is concentrated on and “sent” to the mentalist, who “gets” it. How ? Well, think about it… just because the front pages are all different, doesn’t mean that the pages inside are, if you see what I mean. A simple mnemonic set-up, or even a crib sheet… and you’ve got a minor miracle on your hands. It’s a basic idea I’ve been toying with (it’s been done with magazines before, but that means messing around with staple guns and what have you) but not done anything yet. Thoughts, anybody? |

See if you can get ahold of David Berglas' tape on the newspaper prediction. It is excellent and narows everything down to one phrase.

I quite like T A Waters' "X-Positions" (Mind, Myth and Magick pp392-403).
Folding a newspaper page and cutting it in to 16 pieces, then asking someone to select any number between 1 & 16 seems very fair, but of course it's not Cheers Mark |

I'd recommend tracking down the original Al Koran Newspaper Prediction.
It sounds very much like the TA Waters description above (I don't have MM&M to hand to check). A prediction is sealed in an envelope and a spectator is asked to choose a number within a set range. The newspaper page is folded and torn into 16 pieces. You then count to the selected number, handing the piece of torn paper to the spec. The words on the paper match the prediction. The marketed version was written by Ken deCourcy, and contains a lot of Koran subtleties. It's been out of print for years but magic books by post still have some of the original Supreme Magic publications for the princely sum of 5 British pounds. It comes with a printed crib sheet you can use to cut out any memory work when it comes to the dirty work. |

Matias,
Get your copy of "Prantical Mental Effects" and turn to page 68. "The 20th Century Newspaper Test" meets ALL the criteria set in your original question. You can thank me later Ted (Leondo) |

Glyn,
Yes, the Koran handling sounds similar to the Waters' one, although there is a nice subtlety in Waters' which allows the spec to pick a number after the newspaper has been folded and torn. Cheers mark |

I, like matias, am also curious if anyone has ever done Word Flight. It seems so risky. . .

There is a newspaper test being sold by Eddie Burke, looks interesting. Does anyone know anymore about this.

Matias,
First of all I don't know if you want to predict a chosen word or read spectator's mind(if you force it you can do either).Any- way I have the following suggestions: -Deja view by Lewis Jones(Con-sessions pages 54-58)An improvement of Water's Albertest. -A newspaper effect by Richard Bloch.Magick Vol.4.I think it's called "Hydria"but I'm not sure. -The "Unlimited Principle".Mental Magick of Basil Horwitz Vol.4.It's a utility device and can be adopted for a newspaper test. -Water's section on this subject is superb. Plenty of useful ideas(for example Robert Harbin used only magician's force for this routine!) -If you don't bother using a nail-writer go to Corinda's page 23 "A first class newspaper test".I usually have an ungimmicked envelope in full view.Inside, there is a smaller prepa- red envelope. It's a small white envelope with a side tunnel(Peek Performances page 123)and a blank bussiness card inside(about the same size). In that way I can boon write the chosen word quite easily.Dynamite effect. I had posted a similar message about the Berglas prediction.Check Rowland's response. Hope that helps. Christos |

The manuscript sold by Eddie Burke http://www.mreenterprises.co.uk covers a number of different word selections but is basically his handling of Fogel's Headline Hunter, a routine I have been working on lately. David Berglas' routine goes a bit further than Fogel's.
I have also used to great effect Al Koran's newspaper tear, both as done by Al and the Fred Lowe method described in Waters' book (This face means I agree with Max Maven's Bozo theory of mentalism) |

Larry Becker´s Clearly Predictable is a amazing string of predictions with a newspaper, Jumbo Deck of Cards and a borrowed bill. Very easy to do! You can find this effect here: The Larry Becker Video, Mental Masterpieces, Volume 2. You can buy it here: http://www.mymagic.com/becker.htm
