Surprisingly, the Klutz Book of Magic, edited by John Cassidy, has a wonderful assortment of easy-to-do magic tricks, some involving home craft-type assembly. It sells for about $10 to $15 at most large toy stores. It will offer numerous different types of tricks and lay a good foundation for an 8-year-old. He could perform an entire show just out of this book.

I'll throw in my support for Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic. It's a fantastic book, but what makes it most appropriate for a structured "course" is that it steps up from standard sleight of hand into basic DIY illusions. I wish I had this book when I was younger, I would have had a blast building those things Smile
