Any suggestions on where to get inexpensive foam for packing gear, etc. (and what to look for)?

I can sell you sponge balls and foam bricks and bananas
If you don't like that idea, I get a lot of stuff from Uline.com

Are you looking for the soft foam that say a photographer woud use in his cases to pack his equipment?
This kind of foam can be cut for the various shapes of your items.

Try your yellow pages under foam, look specifically for the mfrs of foam, I found one about 15 years ago, they did a lot of wholesale special orders, to custom fit packing needs for wholesalers, in other words they were doing specific jobs for large companies, where they were doing 100's of the exact same packing need for say computer mfrs. and they had a huge almost dumpster size area full of scraps, and they sold me enough scraps to fill the back of my empty van for $50, and some of those scraps were big 6 feet by 6 feet by 2 inches thick. Thing was they were different densities, different colors, so it was not worth it to them to try and save them, for future jobs. Today, I am still working thru all those scraps, never needed to buy foam again.

Most any fabric shop sells foam. Look for a JoAnn's, Hancock... get the DENSE foam only (usualy a darker color). The easiest way to cut it, and most accurate way.... is an electric carving knife. ( Yup, just like carving teh ol' turkey!)

If there is a Container Store® in your area, check them. Do NOT buy the green polyurethane foam that was used for lining illusion cases. Heat and water will cause it to break down into uric acid and some fibrous material. It will ruin your props.
Check places that sell recording equipment. The egg crate foam used for acoustical treatment on walls is available there. Also check the workout mats you can find at sporting goods stores.

Eric, efoamstore.com is a good source, but it is not inexpensive.

Check out this source for foam: http://www.foamonline.com/types.php?cartID=c1b5e3eb832637baf8a28253af55a770.
If what you're packing is especially fragile & or expensive, consider a high-density or high-impact foam to ensure both protection and impact absorption.
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

Uline is great, but check your local JoAnn superstore if you have one - they sell many different type and sizes, some able to be cut easily to fit your needs. Also, I have seen some in stores like Hobby Lobby from time to time.
